Hello All,

I'm very new to Texas and I have a congregant that has a private tank near Robert Lee with a few catfish in it. She also has a nice RV there and said I can stay anytime. I'm wanting to take a buddy there and fish, but the pond only has a few cats in it. I'd really like to get in some good fishing while I'm there. Any suggestions?

I've done a bit of research and it seems like EV Spence is pretty much a bust right now. Is Oak Creek any good? Any suggestions would be warmly recieved. I just moved here (in December) from Washington state and I had about 50 major bodies of water within 50 miles from home (I lived right off the Columbia River). Now that I'm in West Texas I'm going nuts! It's almost 2 hours to Twin Buttes and Angelo.....so I'm trying to be strategic about my fishing opportunities.

Thanks ahead of time.

--Matt

Do you have a boat or will you be bank fishing?

At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

Should be some river fishing around San Angelo with the Concho rivers running through there along with 3 lakes.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the info...especially about Oak Creek. I do have a small boat. It is an old Grumman aluminum 14.5 foot with a 40 hp Merc on it and a good Minn Kota troller.

Should I have any problems getting out into the lake? I have a 4x4 and I have launched in low water situations before, but I've never done it here in Texas.

I do have a sonar too....so I should be able to watch my depth pretty well.

Thanks for any more info guys!

Pastor---With that rig head to the south pool of Twin Buttes or OC Fisher. Not many can put in since lauching is from the bank.

+1 I didn't even think about the south pool on Twin Buttes. Pastor if you have the time and inclination, you can stop by the Lake Patrol hqtr's on Knickerbocker Rd. in San Angelo, it's right before you get to Lake Nasworthy on the right hand side of the road, and pick up a map and directions.

Matt, out here we don't use "miles". Our standard measurement of distance is in "hours". An hour or two is "nearby" hammer

Taking that in consideration google some of these places "near" San Angelo (like Robert Lee is "near" San Angelo)

1. Lk coleman
2. ballinger Lk
3. brady Lk
4. OH Ivie
5. talpa
6. twin buttes
7. nasworthy
8. middle concho (city/county park below Twin Buttes/Mott dam)
9. s. concho (christoval, county park)
10. n concho (carlsbad, county park)
11. jb thomas
12. ev spence
13. oc fisher (state park)
14. lk colorado city (state park)
15. champion creek reservoir
16. barber reservoir (mitchell county/ n of colorado city)
17. lake sweetwater
18. LAKE TRAMMEL
19. lk brownwood
20. Hords ck lk
21. Lk Fort Phantom hill
22. Leman Lk & Mud Ck (aka sealy-leman lakes) (santa anna)
23. Lk Abilene
24. Lk Winters
25. Spring Ck (San Angelo & Mertzon)

some of these are gated & locked...when you look them up via google it should tell you if a key is needed & where to get the key
(e.g. Colorado river authority)

Most counties will have a web site listing county parks with fishing access
There are bound to be more than this; these are just the ones I've found so far.

good luck

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the info. Can I just take FM 584 to Motl(sp?) Dam Road? It looks like (from Google maps anyhow) that there would be a spot right next to the dam on the southern side of the South pool where I could launch. Or am I better off getting there from the west side using Knickerbocker road?

It looks like the Knickerbocker road route takes me right to what looks like a launch area (with no ramp).

I gotta tell you.....I'm itching to fish so bad I can taste it right now. I've only been once since December when I moved here. This weather right now would be prime time bass fishing in Washington! We don't usually hit the 80-90's until July!

Thanks again for all the info and help. You all get extra credit for helping out a local pastor.... laugh

Knickerbocker Road past the airport, right over the dam, left after you cross the equalization channel, you will come to a old lauch ramp (probably dry) on the left but hang right go to the next sharp left turn. Think you can go a ways and launch from the bank.

Here: South Pool

With 4WD that may be OK if dry. But don't plan on floating from the old ramp South to the pool... LOW WATER (often as in NO WATER) plus the channel is an impromptu shooting range.

As I understand it you can continue on 584 (don't cross over the channel) until you get to the end of the dam. Look for a dirt road just before you cross over the S. Concho river bed (or is it Pecan Ck?) ... look for Line Rd (may not be marked)

sorry but I should add (to previous post) that Line Rd is probably dirt track; also if you are interested in crappie you may want to try the first boat ramp off twin buttes marina road (you may have to drive around the gate ) [us67 south couple miles past sams club]

There are big bass back up that creek channel as well (but don't tell anyone hammer )

If your in Robert Lee you shouldnt be but about 45 minutes to Twin Buttes or Nasworthy but if I was you I would head north to my secret lake about 30 miles.

There is Old City Lake out east of town that has some bass in there. There are two ponds there. Fish the clearer one for bass.
