You do it for the amount of resistance to the spool spinning.
I've never seen an instance when all the pins in would do anything but backlash.
With two pins out, flipping with a heavy jig is what I used to use. Half of the pins out is pretty good for about everything if you know how to cast good.
If you're worried about overrides just leave them all out. Use the tension adjustment on the crank side of the reel for your adjustments. When you are comfortable with that try pushing two pins in. Then later try 3 pins in.
Getting familiar with baitcasting has alot to do with you thumb on the spool. Learning how to thumb a spool as the bait is in the air is half the job.

Push 2 pins in. Pick 2 that are exactly opposite.

Push 2 pins in. Pick 2 that are exactly opposite. same here! i then adjust the spool tension knob to the weight of the bait.

1 or 2 pins out for chunking and winding, all pins in for pitching. Spool tension knob completely free. I just started using the brakes at all this year. I run ABEC 7 bearings with yellow rocket fuel and found that I get better casting distance with one or two out. Don't really make sense but it works. If ya think the Shimano's with all brakes off are hard to handle, try an old Lew's Speed spool with the centrifugal weights taken out. Really keeps you on your toes.

I run one on the Curados and have tried using none without consistent backlash. One out three casts backlashes so I stick with one.
I would start with 6 and work down till your comfortable...

I just keep them even, like putting lug nuts on a car tire. #1 and #4 or #1, #3, and #5 or #2, 3# and #5, #6. I hope that makes since to eveyone else. It sounds right in my head!! LOL

Have you ever tried super tuning you reels? It will allow you to turn off more of the brakes and get further cast. I have a Pflueger Purist that I super tuned and I only put on one brake out of the six.
