When I was a kid my dad & I had about 2 dozen of 'em we used to run at night on camping trips, it was the greatest fun. Hang 'em on trees & go out every couple hours to gather fish & re-bait 'em. Sometimes sitting by the campfire, you could hear 'em go off. We didn't leave 'em baited all night or else the fish would be dead by morning. Catfish & sometimes crappie. Saw a few people dangle 'em from cane poles but that seemed kind of silly to me.
That was Louisiana in the '60s & '70s, not allowed here, now, though.

Yea, If you left em all night, little cats would be hanging in the trees out of the water!

I thought that these yo-yo were outlawed but this is all I could find on the Texas Parks and wildlife site
Throwline: For use in FRESH WATER only. A fishing line with five or less hooks and with one end attached to a permanent fixture. Components of a throwline may also include swivels, snaps, rubber and rigid support structures. * May be used to take NONGAME fish, channel catfish, blue catfish and flathead catfish only. * Placement and Location Restrictions: Throwlines may not be used in * Community Fishing Lakes * Reservoirs or sections of rivers lying totally within the boundaries of a state park * Lake Bastrop in Bastrop County * Bellwood Lake in Smith County * Lake Bryan in Brazos County * Boerne City Park Lake in Kendall County * Lakes Coffee Mill and Davy Crockett in Fannin County * Dixieland Reservoir in Cameron County * Gibbons Creek Reservoir in Grimes County * Lake Pflugerville in Travis County * Tankersley Reservoir in Titus County

The TPWD site lists all legal devices. Yo-yo's have a metal spring that reels 'em in whenever the trigger gets tripped.
