today was my first time to try a flutter spoon. on my 1st cast i caught a 4lber, a few cast later i caught a 2lber. a few cast later i got hung up and could not get it loose. at $8 a spoon i cannot afford to loose them this easily. would a lure retriever help get it back, or should i put cheap hooks on it so that i can bend the hooks when pulling with 65lb braid?

havent tried it but from what Ive read the lure retriever will get em back. I know the kind I use would work well I dont know about the ones with the big metal hoops on top though.....I have the 4 ounce bell sinkers with a paper clip that you slide onto the line.

I use a 10oz sinker with a paper clip on the top of it. Slide it down the line and it knocks it loose.

A lure retriever works too.

If hung up off the bottom and 2-3 oz sinker with clip works or a plug knocked the clips on the fishing line works some time. I used a plug knocker with chains that I purchased from Bass Pro. It is hard to snag the treble hook with the chain but if you weaving a small nylon string in the chain it will help to snag the hook. May have to cut the nylon string when you get it back to the boat.

Hope this helps.

Buy cheaper spoons... I used a spoon in canada and caught an 18 in smallmouth thoughtbit was a rock at first so the hook was set really good.

I fish them in pretty thick brush all the time and rarely lose one. They actually come through brush better than you'd expect, but they definitely will hang up. Simply take your boat right over top of the snag and jiggle your rod with just a bit of slack in the line, just like you'd do a drop shot or shaky head. The spoons are so heavy they are like their own lure retreiver. This works with pretty much all jigging spoons. Be patient, sometimes it'll take up to a minute or more to come loose, but it will sooner or later, even when you mistakenly set the hook on a tree and bury it in. Basically, the only time you lose one is when it gets snagged on a trot line or fishing line that is already snagged on the tree from someone else's breakoff. If it gets in fishing line or a trot line, drop a plug knocker and snag it, then pull as hard as you can and hope for the best.

Speaking of, I have one of your football heads I retrieved with a spoon I need to give you. I snagged it on one of the community holes and Tom said it was one of yours as its a Talon I think.

Tom is exactly right. I throw one a bunch in brush and rarely lose one. I think I have only lost one or two in 5 years.

Has anyone tried replacing the stock treble hook with a weedless treble?
