2000, 150hp Merc. XR6 is cutting out (missing) at high throttle. Just started doing this a few weeks ago. Runs fine up to about 4/5 throttle, then starts missing. New gas, Stabil blue, carbs look good and seem to all be working correctly. 115 lbs. in one cylinder and 120 - 125 in the rest. Can't find any cracks in the fuel line, blub, etc. Any ideas?

coil or a sparkplug is cutting out. Try the sparkplugs 1st. They are the cheepest.

Had same motor, this summer, doing same, was the stator after trying coils, sparkplugs, voltage regulators and complete fuel system cleaning.

??? I'm confused, please don't think I'm doubting you, but isn't the stator's function in the charging system?

The stator has 2-3 coils in it that is called "exciter" coils. Those coils only purpose is to produce current to the Switch box/power pack/CDI ignition modules. The modules are nothing more than a glorified capasitor. It stores the energy and, on command via the trigger, deploys it to the coil. So in essence, the stator has two functions, one provide current to the ignition and a totally seprate set of coils recharge the battery. That is why you can start and run the outboard without a battery. The battery does 3 things, it operates the tilt and trim, it operates the choke, and it operates the starter motor. It does NOT supply power to the sparkplugs....

Thanks, for the clarification. Plugs have about 20 hours on them, they look good, are gapped correctly and I cleaned them before my last outing.

Could be high speed stator going out. Look under the flywheel for what looks like glue or melted plastic. When mine went it went. I could only run up to about 2000 rpms.

Plugs that were in it when I bought it earlier this year and it ran great untill a few weeks ago. Guess I'll look into the stator issue.

I think most people run perma gaps but I knew a guy that swore by L77JC4s. He always tried to put them in my 175. I tried them once and there was no difference. I think they are the same plug as the L76V but not perma gap.

I have a 2001 XR6 150 HP Merc.

A while back it started dropping about 500 - 700 RPMs once on top end, and finally, it wouldn't even get to top end speed and got really hard to start.

Boat shop replaced my ignition switch and that fixed the problem. I still don't understand what the ignition switch has to do with the way the motor runs after it is started.......

Do not run any other plug than what is recommended!! You could do some damage to your motor. It sounds like you have an ignition problem t ome. We would have to look at the unit to let know what is wrong with it.
