I was just wondering if anyone ties directly to the pull point and takes the split ring off.
If so, what advantage / disadvantage would this create?
thanks

action... try it both ways and see what the fish want. I never take mine off(split ring).

try it both ways and see what the fish want I'll have to ask.... What difference does it make as far as action goes?

from what i have heard its easier for the crank to move back and forth on the split ring, compared to one focal point where the line is attached. maybe not even enough for the fish to realize it???i dont know.

easier for the crank to move back and forth on the split ring Makes sense. Possibly a tighter wobble without the ring??

I have seen times that the knot will get in the split and either cut the line, pull the ring apart (if hung up or with a big fish), or work it's way between the rings. I have even seen times that the split will catch the connection point and the knot be off center on the ring and cause the lure to swim "funky". But some lures need the freedom of movement from A ring. (ex. Zara spook) If I have a lure I use a lot. I change the round split ring to an Oval one like on the Lucky Craft lures. You can buy them in bulk on the internet at Barlows. And they are stronger than the round ones. http://www.barlowstackle.com/pdf/fishing-lure-hardware.pdf

The lure was designed and built with a split ring...changing that is bound to affect the action...to the good or the bad is up to you to decide. But I second the oval split rings, best thing in split rings since sliced white bread. Completely eliminates the issue with the split ring damaging the line and make tying much easier/faster since it is almost impossible to get the knot where the ring splits.

Thanks for the info on the Barlow's oval rings. Looks like that smallest size would suffice for most CB's. Agree?

Thanks for the info on the Barlow's oval rings. Looks like that smallest size would suffice for most CB's. Agree? Depends on the size of the crankbait. I bought several different sizes. Another option is like it was said above. Remove the split ring and use snaps. (NOT the swivel & snap style.) Berkley makes cross lock snaps that work pretty good. It all depends on how much faith you have in snaps.

Good comments! Here's a technique that works well for me: Tie onto the split ring (oval is th best)with a loop knot. you get all of the action that the lure is capable of. The loop will tighten when fighting a large fish so just re-tie.

Norman's Speed Clips don't have to retie to change a crank.. great action.
