They sold the recipe to someone else who made the bait for a while and it was not like the original. I am guessing they are not around any more. The recipe is on the web.

Are then any other good baits close to this one that you can still get I have been using secret seven and sonny's and having good results but would like to have something other than a dip bait that stays on the hook longer my favorite bait was danny kings but I started to notice something was different about it and it didnt seem the same and so did my stepdad he told me before he used danny kings he used Lewis kings and it was even better so I did some research on the internet and got a number to call to get Lewis Kings bait and gave it to my stepdad so he called the number and left a message and someone called him back and it was Lewis King and told him that Danny King was his brother and had sold his business to another guy and he has changed the recipe and that Danny King is fishing in a tournament right now with Lewis King bait he said he would deliver his bait to our door if we bout 5 gallons I knew there was something different about danny kings.

I have never used Lewis bait but have talked to him a few times and he seems like a stand up guy and I hear good things about his bait but I cannot personally attest to it.
I use Sure Shot when I do fish with punch bait. If I didn't use that I would use Mr Whiskers bait.

i'm glad to hear somebody is still making Quanah bait. my great uncle Harley Gravley and a pharmacist friend of his made the first Qhanah stinkbait in the late 30's or early 40's. they made it at the time as they needed it since they had no refridgerators. the last we made was in the 90's i believe. access to the red river for saltwater minnows got a little slim. the last i heard RM Shotes a commercial seiner in Quanah retired and nobody was making it. if you have access to saltwater monnows pm me and i can give you the original recipe. its real simmple to make. freshwater minnows we found to be too oily and doesnt make good bait. its to runny. if we could find out what sure shot uses to hold his together it might work. sure shot is nearly as good a bait imo

I will going to Quanah in next couple of weeks to vist mother-n-law. I will be checking to see if they still sell it and ship it. I was told the dude that used to make the bait got minnows from Red and Pease River's but when they outlawed riding on river beds with ATV's getting minnows got a lot harder and he was getting older. I find out I know it was some good stuff back in the day because my father-n-lawused to use it and he said people bought it from all over the country!!!!

Sorry I don't have anything substantial to contribute re Quanah bait-I just found this site by accident while looking up someone from Quanah. I was born there in 1944 and I still remember the horrible smell of Red River (or creek) minnows that had been mashed up, drying in the sun on top of a corrugated tin roof on a farm outbuilding (probably the chicken house) in 1949-1950. Thanks for taking me back.
Tgravley, forgot to say my dad and Harley were best friends. Can you tell me if Myrtle, his wife, is still alive?

I believe Benny uses cat-tails to hold the Sure Shot together. Best of luck to you. i'm glad to hear somebody is still making Quanah bait. my great uncle Harley Gravley and a pharmacist friend of his made the first Qhanah stinkbait in the late 30's or early 40's. they made it at the time as they needed it since they had no refridgerators. the last we made was in the 90's i believe. access to the red river for saltwater minnows got a little slim. the last i heard RM Shotes a commercial seiner in Quanah retired and nobody was making it. if you have access to saltwater monnows pm me and i can give you the original recipe. its real simmple to make. freshwater minnows we found to be too oily and doesnt make good bait. its to runny. if we could find out what sure shot uses to hold his together it might work. sure shot is nearly as good a bait imo
