do any of yall use canoes to bring baits out past the breakers? im talking about for calm days only where there is only small waves on the first sandbar and flat after that? i dont have a kayak but i have a very stable 16' canoe with a trolling motor that pushes it really well. just trying to use what i got to get to some good fish. thanks for any answers.

Yaks don't take on water.

Just be careful, do NOT get sideways in the whitewater. Head on into the wave head out back in. BUT PLEASE WEAR A LIFEJACKET.

That trolling motor you're talking about using better be a saltwater version or can kiss it goodbye to the rust and corrosion.

ya ill definitely be wearing a life jacket. especially since im by myself most of the time! i use my trolling motor in salt water marshes with no problems. ill probably be leaving it at home though just to be on the safe side.

No way, I would definitely leave the trolling motor out of the equation. You will lose it for sure. I have canoed in the beach with waves. We took on way too much water. But on flat days, definitely, why not!

took it out this morning. supposed to be slight wind out of the north but we got to the beach to see lots of wind and LOTS of chop in the water. immediately i thought the canoe would just sit in the sand. well i wanted to see how well it does so i went ahead and put her in and paddled around the 1st gut. VERY stable so i decided to see how it works with the waves at the 1st sandbar. a few of the bigger ones crashed over and put a little water in the canoe, but i had no problems gliding right through. the water was rough, but it was sturdy enough for me to take the bait out, stand up and turn around and drop them, then turn back and ride waves back in to the beach. the current was real bad though so i would always end up about 400 yards to the right of the truck! all in all im pleased with the results and cant wait to see how well it does in flat surf.

I have never done this and have no experience boating or canoeing in the bays or gulf so my input is probably of little value here but I was reading a magazine article where the author used 5 gallon buckets at the end of 2x4's to add ballast to his canoe for bowfishing in a river, he could fold them up and remove them easily when necessary. It might work with making your canoe even more stable. But again I have no experience boating let alone canoeing in the bays or gulf.

Agengo02, You're braver than me... and my hubby is asking what kind of canoe do you have. We've had ours out on wake filled lakes and had issues.

its 15'11" and 37" across the bottom. fiberglass and weighs 85lbs. its a little bulky to carry but it is do-able. the wide bottom helps me float in really shallow water and is really stable. like i said i was able to stand up in it in the choppy gulf. here are some pics of it: im 6'3" 205 lbs. for reference.
