I've caught more bull reds on dead shrimp than anything else I've tried.
Never could figure out why the people around me using cut and live bait seem to clean up, and I get nothing using the same baits and rigs. But as soon as I put a dead shrimp on, I get my fish!

Just goes to show, there IS no 'best bait', haha. These are all great choices and produce well when the timing is right. Myself, I prefer a shrimp fly, a big clouser or a big crease fly in the surf

i think small whiting cut in half at a angle so the guts hang out hook them through the nose cast them and hold on for the fight. I saw my best friend get spooled using that as bait. Big red picked it up turned south and never looked backed.

golden croaker...cut off its head at the front of the dorsal fin. +1 bigger bait means less small fish stealing your bait. I catch my reds on fish heads...best bait I have found....and catching the bait is fun, and keeps my girlfreind entertained

thanks for the great posts guys! this site is so much better than any other site ive been to. great group of guys that dont mind putting it out there!! bull reds should be running soon, cant wait to come down.

Heads of ballyhoo, mullet or skipjack work great for me, not just the head, I cut them in half and use the half with the head.
