Just thought this might help but when I started using that method of finding the school of sandies I swapped out the hellbender diver for an DD22 crankbait. I caught them on the discount rack at Walmart, man they work great with the pet spoon.

If you tie the line to the front hook ring it will pull the front of the hellbender down and it works fine and you dont have to use a sinker. I also leave the back hook on and have no problems. My dad has used method on Lake Texoma for years, but with a jig instead of a pet spoon.

Try tuning the lure. Bend the wire the line attaches to to the right if it runs to the left or vice versa. I have had this problem, so I just vertical jig slab spoons most of the time now.
