I need some advice on this: I have heard that when using Fluorocarbon, you should use more of a sweeping hook set than you do with mono. Being a traditional "jaw breaker" as to my hook set, do I need to re-think the way I set the steel?

Fluoro doesn't stretch like mono so there's no give when you set the hook. A sweeping, or more subtle hook set will suffice with no risk of tearing lips off. Because it doesn't stretch, you need to be concious about keeping tension on the line after setting the hook.

adjust your drag and you wont have the problem. practice with on old hook and a 2x4 about the distance you would normally set the hook on a fish..... you will learn how much or how little drag is needed once you inspect the 2x4(or your line pops).this was the biggest learning curve I had when i started using flouro- I had tooooo much drag on all the reels I was using to throw flouro.

I agree with Ronnie, set your drag right and you shouldnt have any problems. Im not going to get into a pi$$ing with anyone, but when people say the fluro has no strech its very missleading. Fluro dosent strech like mono on the hook set(thats why you hear a lot of people say they broke off on the hookset whit fluro), but will strech as much, if not more, with constant presser. If you don believe me, tie the same #test to someting and see for yourself. At close range you should not try to cross their eyeballs, but away from the boat, with your drag set right, you shouldnt have any problems.

Tony is correct.

Fluoro will stretch and does, but it can not take the "shock" that Mono can.

I agree, with the right drag setting you won't have any problems breaking line on the setting the hook.

Setting your drag and using a sweeping hookset should stop any breaks. Fluro stretches like mono, but it has a slower stretch rate. A snap hook set doesn`t give the Fluro time to stretch, thus causing it to break. It takes a little tweaking to figure it out, but once you do it`s some good stuff.

I have used serveral different brands and to me that is more important than how you set the hook. I deffinately agree that setting your drag is very important but you need to start with a good line first and foremost!

Hard fo me to adjust the way I set the hook. Instead I use a quality line, check my line and knot, and use the largest lb. test I can get away with. Last year I started out using 15 and was still breaking it every now and then. Went to 20 and still got bit just as much. That's one perk of fluoro.
