I looking for a good top water rod for fishing PopR's, Yellow Magic, and other top water baits. No Frogs on this one

I saw the Kistler Magnesium 6'8" Jerk Bait rod but was wondering what other rods were popular with top water fisherman.

Appreciate any help.

I like a 6-6 or 6-8 rod, med to med-hvy not too stiff. You don't have to spend a lot for a good topwater rod.

One of my favorite top water rigs is a 6'6" Berkley Lightning medium action rod and Revo S reel. Awesome combo and great action.

Loomis CBR 783 if those lures are being chunked around open water. If not, Loomis MBR 782. The 782 will also work well with the slightly bigger/heavier lures.

I second the Loomis MBR 782.

So if I get the Loomis CBR 783 could it also be used as a crankbait rod for shallow to medium runners? I fish as a co-angler so I'm always looking rods that I can use for other applications when appropriate?

Yes, but again, it's an open-water rod. That rod really won't turn fish bigger than 2 lbs. It's one of my favorite rods, really, but not when I'm fishing around grass or cover. The MBR 782, on the other hand, is a better rod for that kind of stuff but it just doesn't have that tip action that I get with the CBR 783 that I love for jerkbaits/certain topwaters... If I had to pick one - I guess it'd be the 782.

I'm fond of the St. Croix Avid AVC66MM.

The Loomis CBR 783 will turn fish in grass. It is an unvelievable rod for small to medium cranks, topwaters like yellow magics, etc. and small to medium spinnerbaits. One of my favorite loomis rods and I own a lot of them. Oh, it can throw small buzzbaits very well as well. I have fished as a co-angler for several years and I always have two of the CBR783s with me for various techniques. The MBR782 is also an excellent rod as well. It will do topwater well, small spinnerbaits, whacky rigs, and shakey heads so it is very versitile for sure. Both are excellent rods.

I had a Hendrix 70ML made this year, cut down to 6'8" (my preferred length). Sweet rod! Nice tip for working the bait, plenty of power and a good action for keeping fish hooked. It works good for jerkbaits, shallow to medium cranks, and I use it for some drop shotting too.

Hmm... how many of those cbr 783s have you broken so far? Four or five, I'm guessing... smile

I have not broken any 783s nor any loomis rod for that matter and I have 15 of their rods so far (5 of which are crankbait rods).

Ok this is a cheap rod but it works perfect for me for topwater--a TTF(Texas Tackle Factory) 6'6 Bass Killer. Very fast action which is essential for a walk the dog lure and good backbone. They were normally $99 but found some for $19.
