I am an avid bass fisherman and have been using florocarbon line as my main line for several years now for freshwater fishing. The sensitivity and invisibility of the line makes it far superior to mono for most aplications. My question is do most saltwater anglers use floro as well? My friend who fishes mostly saltwater uses a floro lesder most the time but never uses it as his main line. Are there any disadvantages of using it as your main line for trout and redfish that i'm unaware of? Thanks in advance

I am new to the salt myself but what I can tell you is that I have noticed a lot of guys here like to use a braid line as a main line for castability, abrasion resistance and (most of all I think) the sensitivity and low-stretch nature of superlines. Big, tough mouthed fish in saltwater make a heavyhitting line even more necessary than in freshwater. I use fluoro exclusively in freshwater though, so I know what you mean. Here, like you mentioned, they use it as a leader material and that is about it. It probably comes down to what you are confident in. Hopefully someone with more experience will pop in and add some more useful info.

i only ever really use fluro when plugging for bass here, i use a short maybe 3ft leader to the plug. sometimes i also use the lighter breaking strain for hook snoods due to good abrasion resistance and stiffness to stop it tangling with the rig body, however when bait fishing black amnesia or similar can fish just the same hope this helps smile

I never had used the fluorocarbon until we came to the coast. I had a friend that was guiding here in Aransas Pass, and he introduced me using fluorocarbon leaders when when fishing a bobber. That's the only time i use it. If fishing artificial, I tie right on with the mono.

I've got 3 rods rigged full fluoro. All the others are mono, but will always have fluoro leaders. I prefer the abrasion resistance over the entire length of the line.

Truth be told, I'm prone to an occasional birdsnest....the fluoro doesn't seem to bind and loop as much either.

i think alot depends on the species you're targetting, alot of fish aint too bothered about snood line colour but alot (especally where i fish) seem to be 'spooked' by it. generally asa rule of thumb if the waters flat/calm/clear then use a fluro leader if its coloured then use what ya got, only thing i would add though is at night it doesnt seem to matter on the catch rate, but using clear rig body and black hook snood helps me define the snood and also sort out tangles if i get them smile

i like the sakuma stuff in 20lb and 30lb but i like the berkley stuff in 12lb for light hooks snoods, seeing as though i only use short lengths a spool lasts ages so the price of it doesnt work out too bad

Give Gamma a try Mouldy. It's pricey but awesome. All my stuff has 14 or 16 Gamma.

The only thing I've noticed with flora is that it sinks fast if you are trying to fish top-water. it doesn't work well at all for topwater fishing.

Yeah fluro doesn't float like mono and doesnt absorb water (supposedly) like mono does so you can fish it all day and not have as many tangle problems, IMO. Since fluro is harder to see in the water since it is supposed to refract light the same as water does I have more confidence spooling up on on full fluro.

I fish all the time with braid +fluorocarbon leader(2-14lb.)in fresh and salt water.
I fish with FIRELINE 4LB.,SPIDERWIRE STEALTH 6LB., SPIDERWIRE ULTRACAST 10LB, and XPS FLUOROCARBON(from BASS PRO),SEAGUAR CARBON PRO from 2lb.to 14LB.
Using fluorocarbom leader i catch more fish,so i never fish without of fluorocarbon leader.

Berkley fluorocarbon is not good fluorocarbon.

cant say i've ever had any problems with the berkley stuff so its fine with me,i can never find it in heavier breaking strain though,so have stuck with sakuma for now
