I just purchased a ‘94 Stratos 201 w/ a 200 Evinrude XP. It has a hydraulic 6” jackplate and a 24” pitch S/S ProTech prop. The boat goes nose up on take off, and seems to take for ever to plane. I have the jackplate adjusted where the trim tab on the motor is about even with the bottom of the boat. I start off with the trim all the way down, and raise after the boat finally planes. It will then run about 55 - 60 mph, between 5200 & 5500 RPM‘s. What RPM’s should this motor run… safely? Am I doing something wrong? Is there any rule of thumb with the hydraulic jackplate height / trim combination? Do I have to much prop? I had moved the jackplate up & down after purchasing the boat to ensure full length of travel (my mistake), and did not mark the original spot. Also, the gas in the boat was near empty when I bought it, and now both tanks are full…. It also has a Hot Foot accelerator, and I did have surgery on my right knee…which still hurts, maybe I’m not hitting the throttle hard enough? Any help / ideas would be greatly appreciated. I’ve never had this problem on any other boats (17’ - 19’ no jackplates) I‘ve owned.
Thanks,

Several things come to mind: Full of fuel, check for full throttle operation of carbs, motor too low, motor may need tunning, Motor may be tired (compression), prop may need cavitation holes, too much pitch (go to a 23) and VRO pump getting week. With all that being said, I would raise motor up to 3in. below pad and make mental note of gauge position (bullet nose of lower unit) and try a 23 pitch prop (check with Steve here) because you are 300 to 600rpm short of ideal max rpm. Will take some playing and adjusting to find what this boat likes. Most of these I see have a 225HP on them. Good Luck

is your current prop a 4 blade or 3 blade prop? is it made by Pro-Tech or Power Tech?
a 24p Raker is the right prop for that boat.
i'd do like stick said, and set the engine height at 3 to 3.5 inches below pad. how to measure it? go to my website and click on the prop shaft measurement link. it'll walk you through how to do it.

It's a new 4 blade and made by Power Tech and found out it is a 25p. Sorry my mistake on 1st post. The compression checked out ok (seller info from local marine dealer) and the VRO and water pump is also new. I'll try your suggestions and thanks for your input. Hope to have it out this weekend... weather permitting...
Thanks again!

bethcya that's a tro4. great props, but very aggressive. you gotta run that prop higher than most any other prop out.
try raising your engine 3/4" and see if that helps.

OH. something else you may wanna do.
call power tech, and have them send you a prop seal ring. it slides onto the barrel and diverts the exhaust gas thru the hub, that will help the holeshot immensely!!

you'll have to remove the prop and slide the ring onto the barrell (bottom side) then put the prop back on. simple thing to do.

That boat will be slow coming out of the hole with a 200. 25P is a lot for that particular set up. I would try and drop it down to a 24 Raker as Steve said. This will get your rpm's back up, and your hole shot will be better.

Thanks Steve and everyone else for your input! I found that 2 3/4" to 3" works great. Fast out of the hole, and planes really quick & 66mph by GPS. I also contacted Power Tech, and have a prop seal ring on the way (thanks Steve)! I forgot to mention I have four batteries (1 main and 3 for my 36v / 107# motorguide), and have to deal with that extra weight as well. I'm pleased with the results... and also marked the jackplate position so I won't need to measure in the future. Again, thanks to all... I'm new to the board, and sure I'll have more questions for the experts!!!

Thanks for your input stick steering! It's not a speed demon, but it's comfortable and easy to fish out of, and on Lake Livingston... it's plenty fast for me! Thanks again for your input!
