It's getting to be that time of the year. It's warm right now, but in a couple of days, there's going to be a cold front blowing in. Let's say you've got a fishing trip planned, and the night before, a cold front blows in and ruins your plans. What adjustments do you make to find the fish?

The day after the cold front blows thru you'll still get bit. It's the second and third day after
the front that are tough.
The strike zone will be small for the fish that are biting.
Under these conditions I will pitch plastics or a jig.I will fish these really slow.
I will also go to deeper structure and throw carolina rigs.Deeper fish are not effected as much by the front as are the shallower fish.

catfish are the same but flathead are the acception ... when cold fronts move through in the fall the blues will scatter and the flathead bite will turn on bigtime. I've found that wind plays a big roll in where bluecat are located ... if you're getting a southeast wind the fish will tend to be on the northern side of the lake ... when the front moves through they'll scatter and the following day is a little slow but you can find scattered fish that have pulled back into deeper water or off shelfs or ledges but if the wind keeps blowing out of the north for 4 days or more then they'll tend to be on the southern side of the lake. when fronts come through and for a day or two after the front comes through in the fall the flathead will start feeding heavily and they'll bite cut baits after fronts ... normally live bait is what you use for flatheads but when conditions change on the fronts they'll turn off when the bluecat kind of shut down so I usually switch over to flathead fishing if I'm out there fishing already but if a storm is coming in with the front I usually pack up and get off the water. when I was fishing at keystone dam and a front come in like that and I'm going to change baits I'll reel the bait in slowly from the dam to the pilings and sometimes will get bit by a flathead when I'm reeling the bait in. sometimes I'd put on a bluegill head and work it like a lure slowly through those pilings and pick up several flatheads like that.

It's tuff for sure but I can only fish weekends and play the cards dealt by Mother Nature.

This year with low lake levels, have been throwing weightless plastics at a slow pace or crankbaits deeper. Have also had some success with wacky rig. Low of 41 here tonight, might be time for the jig and pig.
