While lurking a few weeks ago I ran across a thread about Charlie Cyperts Mylar Minnow and about teasing the tail. Cant find it now, but it reminded me about my introduction to Mr. Cypert and his famous fly.

It was sometime in early 90s that Orvis opened their first Dallas store and shortly thereafter WestBank Anglers opened. Charlie was an honored guest and tied his Mylar Minnow.

Its one of the best white bass and schoolie striped bass fly ever, and I have fished and taught this fly ever since. Its easy to tie and easy to teach as the prior thread discussed.
I tie it on jig hook flies that make the snagless.

Cyperts Mylar Minnow tied on #4 EC413 60 degree bend jig hook:

My apologies to Mr. Cypert... grin

How does the jig hook make it snagless?

It's more than the catfish would do.

Runs "hook point up" - probably should have qualified "near snagless".... blush smile

Ok I see now. I allmost got excited about the idea of the magical "snaggless" hook.

I caught a bass once by dragging a little chartreuse thing tied on a 32755 through the bed enough times until he got torqued and hit it. The eyes kept that fly hook point up the whole time.

I sure like your flies! What an inspiration. I have a question though, does any brand carry that #4 EC413 60 degree bend jig hook? Or is this a Mustad only hook etc??? I have some mylar tubing and would like to try this fly. I don't have a proper hook though...I could make do here with something...but it wouldn't be as nice as yours. My order should be in soon for my pink bucktail, salmon hooks...that I ordered for more Blonde work. I am about ready to tackle this bad boy Cypert Minnow too...hehehe.

Kelly

EC stand for Eagle Claw so it's not too likely. That being said, a quick browse of the Barlow's website under jig hooks will show several flavors of 60 jig hooks for sale.

OH...my newbieness is showing. Thanks for the info. I will have to make another order soon...I may try out this fly on a different hook, till then. For kicks and grins if nothing else...
It will give me time to practice the body before I get the proper hooks. My hook box is sure filling up with all these dang hooks. I have nothing on y'all though...hehehe.

this is probably not good advice but here goes anyway..i pay absolutely no attention to what model hook anything is tied, i tie it on the hook i want to tie it on, so far it hasn't been a problem , but I have never tied anything other than bass bugs, leeches and some streamers.

badassbaits, I wholeheartedly agree thats what make fly fishing fun. There is something for everyone - if we all agreed on everything, life would be boring.

Im a make do, use it up, wear it out sort of guy, and thats exactly how I came up with the jig hook idea for fly tyin.

I am an avid striped bass fisherman and got hooked (pun intended) on EC413 60 degree bend jig hooks for fly fishing years ago because I had about a thousand 2/0 EC413 hooks left over from my lead head bucktail jig making days.

When I got serious about fly-fishing for striped bass on lake Texoma, I soon recognized the merit of jig flies that were near snagless and rode hook point-up with little added weight.
The biggest plus was fewer gill hooked fish than with J hooks, with hook ups in the roof of mouth or corner of mouth.

I am a fisherman first and a fly tyer secondly.
If a person doesnt know where the fish live and hangout on a seasonal basis, fish are not going to be caught the fish dont care.

Its a confidence game whatever works for you... smile
George

The mylar minnow is prolly one of my fave all around flies in warm water situations. I tie a variety of them all size hooks, eyes, w/ rattles or w/o, etc........

I made a couple of flies with the mylar tubing. One isn't bad, the other a total flop. I was unable to get the tubing over the ball chain eyes very well... Anyone have a video on this type of fly tying? I looked on You Tube but was not successful. Tying the fly like

http://groups.msn.com/TheFlyFishingBug/f...D_Message=13756

with the cord wrapped over the top seems much more simple. I may try to do it with a larger mylar tubing. Still the part where you go over the bead chain...how do you then get the eye uncovered without making it look bad, as in cutting the mylar with scissor tips or something. I am a visual fly tyer...and it helps me to see it in the works...

I make a small hole with the point of my scissors in the mylar then poke the eye through and then use a lighter to clean it up and keep the hole from getting any bigger. Is that what you are talking about?
