I've got a 46 lb. thrust Motorguide that will only function on #5 speed and high bi-pass...any other speed will not work. The speed control switch has been replaced and that did not fix the problem. I live in Brenham. Does anyone know of a shop that works on trolling motors for a reasonable price that is close to Brenham??? Or, has anyone else had this problem??? And if so, what was the diagnosis or fix for this problem???

Sounds like some bad brushes within the lower unit itself.

Give BORIS MARINE a call, maybe you can ship it to them and get it shipped back. They are in Forth Worth. They are the best at repairing trolling motors and or boat electronics.

This is a fairly new trolling motor...and if something was wrong with the motor itself, why would it only work on "high" and not other speeds??? It wouldn't work at all if the motor was bad right???

I'd say one of two things..

Is the selector switch on your T/M Foot Pedal switched to Hi Bypass?

If not the speed control module may be defective inside the power head.. if it's less than 2 years old you may still be under warranty.

My suggestion would be, Just buy a Minn Kota, but is the prop not spinning or is it just not pulling the boat? If it is just not pulling, check the prop to see if it is spinning. 46 lb. thrust may not be enought for your boat size. Just a thought...

It's plenty of thrust. Was working fine, but as I said at the beginning...it only works on #5 now and no other speed.

I can't just go and buy another trolling motor. Some of us don't have that luxury...but if the repairs are that expensive maybe I'll have to reconsider.

The last power head I bought cost me $80 and I installed it myself.
Digital would cost more because all the switches are unitized/ sealed.
I got it from www.BobRidgwayRepair.com in Dallas.
The power head is threaded onto the bottom of the shaft and will unscrew.

The speed control is inside the power head the speed selector is in the pedal or hand control.
It is either a long copper coil with 5 leads or a circuit board analog or digital depending
on the age of the TM.

Take the top off your T/M housing on top of the shaft.. there are 3 screws on the bottom you
have to remove then it lifts off.. make sure all the wires are in good shape.

PS did you check to see if the Mode Selector Switch on the pedal is in Hi Bypass mode??

It has 3 modes...

Constant (on all the time)

Momentary (On when you push the Pedal Button) at the speed you selected.

Hi Bypass (on High/ #5) when you press the button.. it Bypasses your speed control rheostat
