Hi all,

I'm buying a 16 foot Skeeter SS90 SP with a 90HP "FORCE-By Mercury" engine on it. I'm buying it from a large, reputable dealer and they say they checked out the engine and serviced the lower unit. And they will lake-test it with me before I pay. 90 HP is the max HP the boat is rated for, as I understand it.

I have a few questions:

Is this generally a good engine?

Are there any known issues that are particular to this engine?

Is there a preferred 2-stroke oil for it?

When this engine is fully performing, any guess how fast it will push the Skeeter?

Thanks much for any info/suggestions.

Force was formerly Chrysler. There hp ratings were over-rated. The 90hp would actually put out about 70hp. Since they are now built with Merc parts, not sure if they are any better. I wouldnt own a Force just because they used to be Chrysler. And I have been told to steer clear of Chrysler outboards. Just my 2 cents.

I would not buy a Force. As they get older, certain parts will become harder and harder to find. You will also have increasing trouble finding techs to repair them. I would stay with a current name brand manufacturer. You will suffer at trade in time.

Well, the thing is that I am not concerned too much about resale value, as I am getting the rig for not that much anyway.

Can anybody clarify if this motor "by Mercury" is the same or different from the Force motors that were by Chrysler.

Can anybody comment on some of my other questions in OP?

Thanks much in advance.

We have a 1998 18ft nitro with a 120 Force "by mercury". On these "by mercury" forces I think the lower units are all mercury and it also uses some mercury engine parts.. Thats the only difference from a regular force from the same year I think.Btw, its been a good motor. It had a few problems early on but nothing more than any other manufacturer.

I have a Force 120 also by Mercury. The lowers all Mercury parts, and many of the engine parts are mercury as well. The basic block/heads are still the old chrysler design.

Parts will eventually become scarce, but probably not anytime real soon. Most of the attached parts are still being produced.

They have a bad reputation, use it to your advantage and push the purchase price down. You'll likely get a much better deal w/ the force on there than you would if you had anything else.

Once you get it, be religious about maintenance and take care of it. It'll last as long as any other motor on the market under those conditions.

Hourse power is NOT over stated as someone claims, it is measured from a different point that the mainstream. Force motors measure horsepower at the powerhead, not the prop shaft like the other engines do. They are right that a 120 has about a 90hp propshaft rating. But to claim that the engines are over rating the horsepower is a simple lie or mis interpretation of the truth.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. I do think I am getting a good price on the boat already. Plus, the dealer has put in two new batteries, and installed a new jackstand, and some other work.

So, it sounds like the Force 90 may push about like a Merc 75 or so. Even then, not too bad, since I think they originally packaged these Skeeters with a 50HP.

Decent motors. Either you got a good one or bad one. Most of the bad one's are dead and gone. So the ones still running at this point are ok. Just like any other 2 stroke, carbon is their killer. Make sure they've been taken care of. Parts aren't a problem at this time, and shouldn't be for another 8-10 years or so. I doubt you will own the boat in ten years, since most people sell them every 3-4. So get a good deal, have it serviced, and it should do ok for you.

My brother and I have had an 18foot center console with a force 120 since '96 and have beat it to hell running full speed everywhere, pulling skiers, tubers, and through rough water. It has high hours and has never given us any problems. Everybody told us we bought a bad motor, but it has been nothing but reliable to us. Only changed the plugs a couple of times and the impeller once, but it didnt need it.

If you fish one or two weekends a month they're o.k. If you want to use it a lot, they suck!

Well, the dealer took me for a lake-test today before I bought it. The motor started up pretty easy, smoked a bit for a while. The shop guy says basic two-stroke motors like that are going to smoke, no getting around it.

The motor seemed to run pretty good to me. The rpms maxed out at 5000, and the speedometer got up to around 45mph(yes I know they are not real accurate). I wasn't able to play around a whole lot with the trim, though. I thought the rpms should get up to 5500 to 5800, right?

The only thing I wondered about was that when I gave it the last bit of throttle, the engine seemed to get a bit less smooth sounding, like maybe the fuel/air mixture was too rich or maybe the fuel/oil mix was a bit heavy on oil. Also, the boat has been sitting in the shop for some weeks now.

Any thoughts?
