Probably because it was expensive, overly complicated, heavy, hard to keep aligned and, most of all, unnecessary.

It seemed to be a great idea. Too many moving parts probably caused a lot of maintenance and mechanical issues.

I drove one just once or twice. The USAF used to have these Coleman Tugs to tow aircraft around. They had 4 wheel steering and could "crab" left or right. Had a lever that you would move left or right to swing the back end in either direction.

I haven't thought about these in 40 years.

The newer S-Class Mercedes vehicles are 4-wheel steering.
