As recruiting goes into overdrive, I have a question for those better informed than I.

Historically, granting a full ride scholarship was the prize to get kids to come play for a team. The NCAA limits the number of scholarships that a team can grant.

Now, in the day of NIL, a scholarship worth $50,000/year is nothing more than just walking around money for these athletes. They can get multiples of that.

So, my question is what prevents a school from handing out it's full compliment of schollys...then continuing to load up talent by enrolling kids with the understanding they will have to use some of their nil money for tuition and board?

Nothing, it’s been happening for years. Kids with full Pell grants have their room, board and tuition paid for already. Schools can take those kids and save that scholly for another player.

Addendum, they have to stay under the roster number for their respective sports. Football is 85 scholar shipped players, I think 15 in basketball and baseball 32 players. I know football is correct, baseball and basketball is “I think”.

I found this interesting. This is what NIL is doing to kids in college. If this is true, it will only get worse if this demand works.

“ Chas Wolfe of Prep Scouting reported Tuesday night that Storr's asking price is $1 million. No, that's not an error. AJ Storr reportedly is asking for $1 million to transfer.

Wolfe reported Kansas countered with $750,000 to land the ultra-athletic guard/forward, but he turned it down. I've reached out to Storr to see if the claim he wants $1 million is true, and will update if I hear back.”

Baseball is a different animal in the NCAA scholarship hierarchy, I found this out the hard way years ago.
NCAA D1 baseball programs are allowed to offer a maximum of 11.7 athletic scholarships, which can be divided up among a maximum of 32* players on a 40 man roster. A D1 player on scholarship must receive a minimum scholarship of 25% of the total cost of attendance (although this rule is likely to be voted away when the NCAA Governance Committee is formed in the fall. A full scholarship includes tuition, fees, books, room, and board.

yep D1 baseball scholarships are like gold they are rare. Most get partials at best.

Yeah it's about time they give more scholarships for baseball.

They are limited to that many scholarships. They can have as many walk-ons as they want. Those kids getting NIL money and paying for their own room, board and tuition would be considered walk-ons to the athletic team. They're not on scholarship so not limited by the 85 cap. Now they are capped at how many players they can dress out for a game.

I think we are going to see NIL totally replace scholarships. The whole system has been blown up by the NIL and all the old rules will have to be rewritten.

I sure remember the old days when the Corn huskers came to Lawrence. They dressed out almost as many players as we had folks in the stands.
