Don't listen to the naysayers. I moved to the outskirts of Austin (yea, I would NEVER live near downtown) and it's awesome. Depending on if you can work from home or not will decide where you need to look. We live just west of Cedar Park in the hill country on the northwest edge of Lake Travis. GREAT VIEWS. Yea, traffic is a pain, but we don't go downtown or pass through the I-35 corridor often. The downside is it's true...Austin has changed...to a degree. The people have changed. But there's still a ton of good people here. I grew up in Dallas and do not regret one second moving down here. PM me if you want specific info on real estate and areas for you and your family. I can help.

Yes, Austin is great if your don't go into Austin. I left Austin in 2018 and moved to Temple and any time I have to go into Austin I am reminded why I left Austin.

Housing is the biggest issue. Anywhere in Austin or surrounding suburbs is crazy. I know people that commute from Llano to Austin for work. They drive a rice burner that gets incredible mileage

I resided in Kyle for about 3 years right before the boom hit there, great little town. No so little anymore though.

Its all a point of view. My brother lives next door to the state capitol. He moved here from Manhattan. He says piece of cake. Me no way in heck.

Three grandchildren, all Aggie engineering types, have chosen to work in Austin. One who is married to an engineer just bought a house in Blanco, and commutes to Austin 3 days a week. The other two are single and live in expensive apartments but have good salaries that help offset.

Native Austinite. Have lived in the area my entire life. Moved out of Austin in 1986. I currently live in Liberty Hill. The entire area is booming and booming fast.
Commutes from Georgetown is around 1 hour to downtown. Construction on 35 slows it down.
From Buda/Kyle is an hour to downtown.
From Dripping Springs and west of there is about 45 minutes to downtown.
From Cedar Park/Leander/Liberty Hill to downtown is 45 minutes to an hour.

Only areas I would avoid is here:

Anywhere west of Mopac and it looks like the Hill country. Even like Lampasas or Llano.
