northern Wyoming usually didn't get last snow storm till second week in may

Yes in the southside of Aledo. My dad sent me a video from NRH Saturday and there were a ton up there too. He has never seen them in the middle of the metromess like that. People at my wife's work kept arguing that they were geese lol. There is a significant difference in the sound the two make.

The chirp/whistle of the sandhill crane is pretty unmistakable. It can be remarkably loud even when they are very high and far away.

All I can say is if you knock one out of the sky but they aren't dead, make sure you take your gun to finish them off. Them SOB's are tough and their beaks are sharp.
