Anyone have opinions on micro clover? My backyard never looks good and I'm thinking of options. One is to mix micro clover into my existing mixed grass/weed combo. The other possibility is to kill what I have, till the ground and seed with the micro clover. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

No knowledge on this but why do you want clover as your yard cover? We fight it every year to keep it killed off.

I'm sick of mowing and and additive routines and my backyard rarely looks good. It just seems like a big waste of time and money. The micro clover rarely has to be mowed and maintains an approx 2 to 3" height and doesn't require fertilizer, pre & post emergent. It's my understanding that the micro doesn't flower like larger clover. Seem like it might have potential.

We have it on one side yard where the tree cover is heavier. I like it, but I think I want to replace with real grass. It seems to me like a cheap way to get ground coverage. So my side yard looks cheap to me.

I have to look into the pros and cons.

Been following. Honestly. I'm not sure how you're planning on making it through this year or any basic TX with it?

I don't understand. Obviously you know a lot more about this than I do. That doesn't sound encouraging. What am I missing?

I don't know anything about micro clover. Quick google search the other day shows that it won't handle high heat and drought which is TX. A little deeper dive I do see some people in the northern part of the US doing it which also screams it won't work well here. I've never heard of anyone doing it here and I also have not done a deep dive on it. Maybe 30 minutes of research on it. How big is your backyard? Sun/shade? You might look at different ground covers? I wouldn't want you to spend the effort of tilling up, seeding and have it fail and back to square one. I'd deep dive into whatever route you're looking to go before pulling the trigger.

Thanks for the wake up call. I guess I've only been reading the good stuff that I wanted to hear. My backyard is about 2000 sf. 70% mainly sun, 30% part sun/shade. Your advise on this is greatly appreciated.

After reading this and other material, there seemed to be so many advantages including being drought tolerant. I was considering a mixed blend which seemed to be recommended. But, if it can't handle the heat, then it's out. I'm also hoping to eliminate 50% of my grass by planting shrubs in controlled areas. https://www.thespruce.com/micro-clover-for-lawn-health-and-beauty-2152956

Spruce would probably be my last go to trusted source. I'd be looking at University studies at a minimum. Even from the Spruce.
Not heat or shade resistant: In the high summer heat, it may die back, causing bare spots in your lawn. At a minimum, micro clover needs at least four hours of sun per day, so it doesn't fare well in the shade of a tree or building. Exposure to constant dry heat might require reseeding once peak heat passes"
I have no issue with FAFO'ing but I think you would be completely wasting your time and money with this.

Thanks for your time, Derek. I value your opinion and will now head back to the drawing board.

Thank you for the kind words. At the end of the day my opinion is garbage. Granted I'm a turf guy, and I think if we work together, we can find a solution for your problem. I just hate seeing wasted money on a project you're looking at and only to be disappointed in a year or two.
