This cold and windy arctic weather has been driving me crazy and seems to have been going on forever. When you're getting old and have a small boat it's wise to be a bit cautious about launching. Yesterday it looked like a break with the extreme cold and the high winds, so time to hook up the boat and head to the lake.
It looks like a summers day, right? Not quite! The first clue is I'm the only boat there, and the second clue?
The water temp had dropped to 42F, and the air temp was the same. It felt like a heatwave compared to the past few days. With the water dropping 10F since my last visit, I was figuring that the catfish would be headed to the deepest parts of the lake, and that proved to be right on. I spotted fish in 35 feet of water, and decided to drift a deep creek bed.
There was still enough wind to drop the wind sock, but hey I will take it! You may be asking about bait. As the wind was forecast to get up, I wanted to spend every minute fishing so purchased my bait from the local Asian Store. The first couple of hours I couldn't conjure up a bite, but patience paid off.
A really nice 23 pound blue, in tip top condition. Another hour in a new spot and another big takedown.
A big ole fat blue at 29 pounds. Both fish had to be 'burped' before returning them to the water. I caught a few more smaller fish up to the teens, and ended up just short of 100 pounds in total. That is fantastic for me!
Bobbing around on my favorite lake and seeing this on your fish finder always brings a smile.
The wind that was forecast never materialized, and the day ended with beautiful calm water.
For this old dude days like this are precious. Outdoors on the water catching big fish, is there anything better?
A truly epic day and I am truly thankful.
