Just a simple question.

Is it worth doing your yearly maintenance or taking it somewhere (lower unit oil, water pump, spark plugs, etc.)? I've done my lower oil multiple times but never the water pump and plugs.

Also, if there is anything else I need to add please do.

The motor is a 2001 Yamaha ox66 225.

With gas we have now days you might want change all filters and get injectors clean , then you be good for a couple of years

I do what maintenance I can to save money.

You'll save a load of money, and be more familiar with your motor.

Getting ready to do mine... might do it tomorrow depending on the weather, or later in the week. Ordered the 100hr kit from Sim Yamaha, for the SHO it's pretty strait forward. The hardest thing might be maneuvering the water separator filter into the bilge since you will be spilling some gas no matter how you do it. So I had shop do it for me last week when I had it in getting Bob's Hole shot plate done . The rest of it is basically plugs and fluids and filters. Many YT vids out there as stated to walk you through it.

I *may* do the impeller as well. Since I am not original owner, I don't know last time it was changed. It's a 200 hour item, so IF the previous owner followed the maint. schedule it's not due till the "next" 100 hour. I have great water pressure, but down here it's common to get sand/brackish water/etc eating up the vanes, so kinda want to go ahead and replace it for peace of mind. Haven't done it before but from the vid's it seems simple enough. Shop said one hour maybe 1.5 if I want them to do it.

If you are replacing a water pump on a Yamaha OX66 2001 model make sure you buy the little plastic/stainless ring and cut it off and use the new one. Boat shop people will know what that is. Don’t tear up your hands trying to get it off, worth the $15 for a new one and will save you hours. Go buy 6” or 8” bolts to use in place of the lower unit bolts to help get the shifter lever lined up. Once lined up you can put the regular bolts in. For the life of me I couldn’t get the key out of the key way so just replaced the rubber impeller vs the impeller and plate. Worked great. Make sure and check your low pressure fuel pumps to see if they are leaking, three of them easy to check. Just loosen the bolts holding them and pump up the primer bulb, if they leak replace all three if they haven’t been done in a while. Great motor, easy to work on.

It takes me longer to take it in to get the maintenance done than it takes me to just do the maintenance myself.

Why is it a car oil change place can change the oil in 10 minutes and a boat dealership wants the boat for two to three weeks?

My initial 20 hour service took $145 and two beers. Oil change, gear oil change, two filters….40-45minutes. Dealership wanted over $300 in labor, and they didn’t have beer. The dealership also, for some reason, charged $60 more for the exact fluid on their “estimate” than they sold it to me OTD for $145!!!

Being an OX66 at that age I’d change the filters inside the fuel pump and clean the O2 sensor as well. Plenty of YouTube videos out there to walk you through it. Wouldn’t hurt to replace the lift pumps too.

I do all my own. Not having to take it to a dealer and paying their labor costs makes it worth my one afternoon. I get all the parts and fluids off Amazon.

newer motors its even easier. Always done my own maintenance, lead time and costs make it worth it in my opinion.

I do my own. Like stated above. YouTube is your friend. I own a Yamaha so I just order the tune up kit for my motor. Comes with oil, filters, plugs, seals, and lower unit oil. I add a water pump kit and I have everything I need. I do mine every 100 hours. +-. The water pump I’ll just do the impeller every other time. I change the water fuel separator every 100 hours also.
