Looking for feedback from those who have Eva marine decking on your kayak. How is it working, lasting and what brand?

I bought a used kayak that has some pretty heavy rash (scratches) on the tops of the gunnels and I knew when I bought it I was going to do something about the rash. It was too good of a deal to pass up so now I’m looking for something to conceal the rash since it won’t come out.

You get out of it what you put into it!

I don't remember the exact brand, but I got some off Amazon for my Diablo Amigo. The stuff works great and I had it on for about 2 years before I sold the yak.

It's popular on poling skiffs. My understanding is that it's pretty durable. I know for a fact that it'll hold up for four or five years, but I have no idea how much longer than that it'll last.

Thanks guys I’m mainly concerned with the adhesion. I want to avoid having to add additional glue because I also want to be able to pull it up and replace it if it gets damaged or stained. I know a guy that had his foam decking chewed up pretty good by mice.

I would love to avoid it altogether but this used kayak I recently bought has some heavy rash type, fine scratches in some areas and that drives me nuts. This seems to be the only way I can conceal them since they won’t come out.

If it's just cosmetic. I would just take some fine sand paper and sand it down. Then apply some heat to it with a heat gun. I've seen some people use propane torches also.

+1... especially the heat, if you heat the plastic before you apply the adhesive, it should greatly increase the initial bond. From here, it should be fine (assuming that it's a decent adhesive).

My issue with doing this is when you heat up the plastic on kayaks (at least in most Hobies) it makes the heated area shiny and to me it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I've done it to all my kayaks. I can only tell if I sit there and stare at it. I also don't put the heat gun too close to the area I'm working on. I keep a wet rag next to me to wipe down the area right after each pass with the heat gun.

So the wet rag is used to prevent the plastic from getting too hot too fast?

There are some Chinese knockoffs out there - in sheets easily purchased. That is the stuff I would question - only as far as the adhesive. True Sea Dek uses 3M and mine has stuck real real good on my technical poling skiff. That said, I do have a supply of the China-made rolls that will line the floors inside the cabinets of my Airstream rebuild - - - not nearly as important there!
