I've looked and google isn't my friend. I'm looking to pick up some newer model Shimano baitcasters and I was hoping someone could enlighten me as to which models are made in Japan only. Thank you

Nowadays Shimano only make their higher end reels in Japan.

Starting with which? I have some Scorpions and CU100 DHSV all circa 05-09, so what I need is some type of breakdown on the models not made in Malaysia. I don't have any interest in going off shore I'm alright using older models available in the US.

This might help, I use Shimano Bantam's 2018 model and they are made in Japan as well as the newer bantam MGL "A" model, I also know the metaniums are made in japan. Beware of some of the older Metaniums that do NOT have brass gears (was a bad idea on shimanos part but the new ones are brass). Other than that, the Calcuttas are made there, and I think that's it. I also have a Shimano Exsence A spinning reel made in Japan, the Stella is the only other spinning model made there.

Thank you this is what I'm looking for. In the old days you didn't have so much gobbly goop to wade through. CU 100 / 200 etc, so many versions of Curado I'm trying to reduce the amount of time I have to spend trying to find what I want. Thanks again.

Sorry. I misunderstood/misread. I thought you wanted reels only available in Japan.

I have cleaned and serviced many of the old Japan Shimano reels. They are flat frickin amazing when you service then right. If you need some tech help ping me with an Instant message. With the right bearings and the right oil they are unbeatable.

The Curado 150 MGL is a fantastic Shimano reel.

SLX is another good one for the price.

You don't need to just stick to the Japan "only' made Shimano reels to get a good one.

I would say stay away from the newer JDM reels unless you live over there. Ran into a couple of incidents where parts are needed and they can only be ordered from overseas. They don’t cross over like they used to.., this was confirmed by shimano

Buy you a Lews and throw away the Shimano, Lews require so much less maintenance and cast further
