Fished the lake this morning, got there a little late, caught 10 catfish. The shad were working the shorelines pretty good. Went back this evening to try to get some shad at the nails creek boat ramp, nothing! Thanks for the report.

The COE closed the Dam Road. Not sure why. The lake is only 2 feet above normal.

I have been to Lake Somerville several times over the last couple of weeks and have been skunked every time. I tried to fish at the dam, off the marina and the shoreline around it, and over at Irwin Bridge. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, can't even get a bluegill . Welcome to the forum! Have you tried Lake Bryan? Fishing along the dam/rocks can be pretty good for black bass. Lake Somerville can be great, but there's definitely a learning curve.

The COE closed the Dam Road. Not sure why. The lake is only 2 feet above normal. They are doing a survey of the structure, supposed to reopen as soon as they finish. Brenham radio station announced it a day or so ago.

I haven't tried Lake Bryan, I didn't care too much for it when I visited it last summer. I enjoy the challenge of Lake Somerville, every time I get skunked it gets me a little more fired up and eager to catch some fish. I think I will go out with some chicken breast and worms and try to catch some channel or blue cats. Thanks for the welcome!

May i suggest chicken livers instead of breast, or fresh cut bait if you can catch some. I often will go to the local community stocked ponds in B/CS and catch bluegill and take them to somerville to use as bait.
If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.

Also, if they start releasing water below the dam this time of year can be great for catching channel cats. I used to catch a lot of them using some catfish bait fished below a cork and just letting it drift.

I feel like I'm spending most of my time rebaiting the hook when using it.

I went out to the main lake the last couple of mornings. I went to Welsh Park yesterday morning and the lake side of the dam this morning. The shad spawn is not really progressing like I expected. It seems very much like last year. It sure seems that the freeze 2 years ago took its toll on the shad population. Hopefully I'm wrong and it will explode. I caught several 16 inch hybrids but no white bass the last couple of days. Same thing I experienced last year at this time. I still haven't seen any surfacing activity or white bass pushing shad into the coves.

Thank you for the report J-Moe. So it wouldn't be an ideal time to bring my mom up their to slay the whites during an ideal shad spawn...but it's mother's day I'll figure out a way to catch something.

They have a decent release going. Lake is 3.5' over pool. 1000CFS moving at the spillway. May give it a go this weekend.
