I found that out a few days ago. What gives? I also found out the only way to shut the motor off is the kill switch. Choking it only makes it unstartable the next time.

do you have reverse? why would you want to kill the motor by choking it as opposed to pushing the kill switch?

You probably lost the shift cable. That could be from the actual cable breaking.

You probably lost the shift cable. That could be from the actual cable breaking. At least now the motor starts every time and the slowest speed is adequate without having the motor serviced. Is the shift cable accessible? If broken, can I fix it?

You can see the shift and throttle cables under the hood of the engine. Get someone to help you move the shifter and see if it's pulling back and forth. If it's broken it will not come back.
If it's not been idling at the right rpm, you sure don't want to shove it into gear, you will tear the ring and pinion gears up. It sounds to me you need some work with her before anything else gets messed up.
