I believe so. I asked them the other day on FB and they said yes.

Me and a buddy are going to try and fish the creek this weekend, i have never fished it before. Are yall looking for structure in the creek? or just blind casting and covering as much ground as possible?

Hey, Srj79. When fishing these creeks you're generally looking for the deeper pockets of water. However, the water is very low right now and you may find it tough fishing. If it were me and I was going to be there on the weekend I would probably try fishing the points out on the main lake. Either that or fish the marina for crappie. Best of luck to you.

Can someone educate me on the “order” of the run? Do the males come first and then the females? How long is the delay between the 2? How long does all this last?

Reason I am asking is this years catch hasn’t followed the same pattern I remember. I have been fishing the Angelina regularly since early February - like almost weekly. Started out normal - slow and catching small males only. Last weekend in February we had a great day catching 40 between 2 of us but only a few females. March 9th we caught a 2 man limit all big fish but only 16 females and they had eggs. Missed last week and yesterday absolutely slayed’em getting 50 in around 3 hours. That is when you know it is on bigtime catching big fish fast and we just knew the run was in full swing, but when we cleaned them there were only 7-8 females and it looked like their egg sacks were empty. So where are the big females full of eggs? Have we missed them or are they just getting started?

Each body of water/watershed will have a different schedule. Some watersheds, fish will stage as early as Dec-Jan and the run be finished by End of Feb. Other watersheds wont start wont start till later. Water temps, moon phases, rainfall, water flow, and amount of sunlight all play factors so timing can vary. Males typically stage first, followed by the females. I had similar questions after my last couple trips on a particular watershed where we cleaned over 200 fish within a week yet less than 1/4 were females, most of them small. Catch numbers greatly reduced in the following week, went from 3 man limits to 1 man limits between 3 people. Big change in catches, still no big females. Same reports from others I talked to that had been fishing that same watershed. We have yet to see any big females show up and be caught in numbers and the bite has slowed drastically.

I'm seeing the exact same thing Boudreaux. I fished Lake Houston Wilderness park yesterday and only caught one white bass. I've been fishing the Trinity creeks and others and never really got into any big females. It's been the same story in lots of places. Very strange year.

I was talking with a fellow bank fisherman yesterday and told him I thought it was about over. His response was "It can't be, the big females haven't shown up yet" grin

You know I've run out of the usual excuses so I need to make up some new ones! wink.
So after thinking about this situation a little more I began to wonder if the lunar cycle might be the factor in the late nature of this seasons whitebass run.
Easter is tied to the lunar cycle and it is later this year as well...
Or maybe the females have gone gay and are partying down in the lake while the boys are way up the river looking like lost pups...

The timing of the rain and rising/falling stained water levels certainly is a factor.
And when the creeks get very clear the whitebass and other fish become very venerable to predation from above and a host of issues below partly due to the huge numbers of whitebass in small pools.
This is the time of the year when a drier than normal season beginning can do serious damage to small bodies of water.
Many times over the years towards the end of the whitebass run I've heard about and witnessed minor fish kills in small creeks that didn't get enough rain in time to keep it flowing and allow the whitebass to get back to the lake.

I like to get out around the Islands mid lake. Shad will stack up there on those island shorelines, the big rocks near Rocky Creek, or the big hump north of Rocky. Early morning topwater action is my favorite.

Exactly the same as White bass. 5 weight rod, 6 lb. fluorocarbon and magical clousers.

They usually make about 5 runs on me before I land them though.

I need some experienced kayakers/fishers to help me Saturday at the Lake Somerville State Park - Birch creek unit to guide/lead paddle trips up Birch creek. Starts 9AM Saturday April 1st. You do not need to be an expert.. just better than newby to kayaking and bring your fishing pole..

Contact me (Ben Tedrick) 979 220 4420 for more info.
