This is not meant to start a bait war, but more "how to use it"... #14650356 03/05/23 01:07 AM

I've used Danny King for years, but after seeing other discussions, I thought that I would venture out to try other baits. Right off the bat, I going to say that I've caught more cats on chicken. Nothing added to it, it just seems to catch catfish. But more to the point, it STAYS ON THE HOOK. I have tried CJ's in the past and today I went heavy on Stubby's. They both catch fish. Plain and simple. I was looking for something besides DK and chicken that I could just open up, put on the hook and fish. I am having hell trying to get CJ's and Stubby's stay on the hook. I've tried adding some torn up cottton balls to CJ's and that seems to help. Stubby's is another matter. I've tried quarter size balls, half dollar sized balls, round, tear drop etc... Today was not a hot as hell day in Texas but It would only stay on the hook about half the time. Big treble, smaller treble, it did not matter. It was not getting swiped by the catfish bandit. I watched one time as I reeled it up, it just disintegrated. Before anyone suggest adding flour, I'm going to do that.

I guess I kinda figured that if I'm buying a product to put on the hook, that It ought to stay on the hook for what I'm paying for? Please don't take this a bashing. It's a plea for help or suggestions.

Give me a call 903-987-2315. I can guide you through it. I can tell you from what you are describing that you have way too much on the hook of you are using quarter and half dollar size pieces. Also, if the bait is soft, try keeping it in a cooler.

CJ's I keep in an ice chest, no ice just the insulation of it. Use a no 4 or 6 treble and push it as far into the bait as you can. Pull it up at an angle, and get a sizeable chunk on your line. In slack water it will stay on your hook as long as you don't reel it in fast for a while. I have seen people talk about part of the way it attracts is by slowing coming off and drifting down stream. Jeff with Team Catfish did a video once saying when he gets to a new spot he would cast out his brand punch bait and reel it in pretty fast almost like chumming the water. In the summer when it gets hot and runny, I add some lint from the dryer to it and that has done the job, but the best is to keep it in the small ice chest for as long as you can. I even keep the lid closed and just open it to bait a hook then close it back. This is just my method, I am sure more will have other ways they do it.

The Stubbys I also found you have to hold the rod and set the hook on any slight tick or the bait and fish will be gone without you even knowing.

Somehow they seem to be able to just vacuum it off the hook and keep on going. They do not hold it and run with it like they will a natural bait or even chicken.

Hold the rod and you might be surprised how often its not the bait falling off but getting stolen.

It is very impressive how they can clean a treble hook off and not get hooked, I have used the quad hooks many years ago and they help with the more juicey and delicious baits, buy you some long small springs that you can just slip over the eye of the hook, that helps as well. Side cutters you just cut them to just a few coils to spin over the eye of the hook.

You can buy the hooks with the springs, but I always made my own and I was using the quad hooks anyway. Now something else you could do is put hair in the bait, I do like the comment on the lint from the dryer. When you could go to the feed store and buy a small bag of cotton seed meal all nicely ground up, as a little lake rat running all over we took catfish Charlie and a little cotton seed meal and made the jar of catfish Charlie not only stay on the hook better, but we stretched what we called store bought bait to last longer, store bought bait was considered a luxury lol.

Heck I had to trade a big tow-sack full of live crawfish to get one jar of catfish Charlie, I wanted as many options of bait to use lol. Besides gas for my tiller steer and lawnmower what else did a lake rat spend all the money I made back then on lol. 4 or 5 bucks was a lot. .22 shells was like .59 cents, gas was less than a quarter a gallon. I was making a killing picking up all the drift wood along the waterfront property, there was no trash from people around the waterline. Dang got money for return beer and pop bottles I picked up everywhere, they were some of the easy money lol.

You know while I just love to smell fresh ground cottonseed, I thought of a few other things you could mash into each little bait, I have used it more toward the carp, Buffalo and drum though... So, I would stick with the hair and lint, or you really want to get serious, get some of the quad hooks and some small wire springs to slip just a short piece over the eye of the hook.

That is what I have done, it worked great. The worst thing to do I found was make to big a bait ball to mash into the hook. To big a hook comes in a close second lol, just how things was for me anyway. Just say'n

One of the best "adders" I have found, and it is natural too, is the head of cattails. Get them when mature, just before they start to come apart on their own. Break them up and mix with what ever your bait mix of choice is, and it will help hold on a hook!

I have been told there are a lot of the bait companies that use cattails. (no jokes intended about using the whole cat, etc. LOL)

Yep, cattails. Gather a bunch when they're ready and stick them in the freezer. They'll keep forever.

No I want help. Just practicing patience to let everyone have time to give me their suggestions and guidance. Patience is a virtue in life and fishing.

I would think the best people to talk to would be the ones who make the bait and fish with it all the time. Just offering.

Littlewheel,

I thought the same thing dude, I just wonder who that animal is lol. You like see him from your mirror maybe? lol

On another verse of this very bait, I have yet to get any of it ordered, but I darn sure plan on it. I been hoping to get to make a quick trip over in y'alls neck of the woods for maybe a lesson on sonar work from some of you manuals that do all this to the 9's and make it look so easy...

I am just thinking maybe you can point me in the direction of the guy that makes this secret sauce lol...
