I like to throw them. They walk almost like a spook which I like, but I can also pop it sometimes. Just a different tool among many in the tool box.

I throw a popping frog A LOT. I almost never throw a standard walking frog. I throw it on a 7’4 Heavy Moderate action rod. This gives me the backbone I need to winch them out of the cover without sacrificing the tip I need to still get a great walk/pop. I pair that with a Curado K and 65lb braid.

I almost always throw it on 50lb braid and like mentioned above, I let the cover dictate how heavy a rod I use. I prefer a 7-7’2” MH, fast action rod. I get better walking action out of that setup than a heavy/fast. I probably tried 7-8 different rods ($100-$250+) trying to figure out which ones I liked best and broke a couple.

Currently I use a
Phenix M1 7’2” MH (also have a heavy model) the most.

Got a new one try this year, Kistler Chromium frog rod. Labeled as Heavy Medium Heavy. We will see how it goes. My son gets to use the ones I don’t prefer and I never hear him complain. 😆

I throw them on a Falcon too…but I like the 7’ heavy fast Lizard Dragger. I use a Lews reel, custom lite I think it is. It doesn’t hold a lot of line, so I have started to use 50lb power pro. I have t had an issue sticking hook in em with this setup.

I have thrown this exact setup since the 90's on Fork with the Popping Scum Frog. Just have changed from those days using 20 lb Big Game line to using 50 lb braid. When throwing other Topwaters besides the Frog or Buzzbait I now use a 6'10" Head Turner with 30 lb braid for Popper and Spook type baits.
