went and looked back to see what it has been the last few years for bass champs in jan on rayburn 2017-397 teams 2018-332 2020-268 2021-291 2022-208 2023-168 not a good trend And the problem I see with that with me being a part of those diminishing numbers is that even with 168 teams, anyone outside of the top five and maybe a couple inside the top five actually lost money. 5th place at $1200 would've been a losing effort if it were me and my partner. Minimum two weekends of rooms, fuel, food, baits, and entry fee and we're in the red on $1200. I never went into a BC event "expecting" to cover the cost, but if fortunate enough to place in the top five I would 100% expect to be able to cover expenses at least. Walls, You are correct. I have fished many events over the years and always justified not breaking even as, "it's just a hobby and fun". But the "ROI" has reached a new level of no fun if your not in top 5 on the reg. Maybe it's just because I'm in my 50's now and not that mad at them anymore. LOL Reached my 50s a couple years ago- maybe that's the tolerance for burning money threshold.

I never went into a BC event "expecting" to cover the cost, but if fortunate enough to place in the top five I would 100% expect to be able to cover expenses at least. Take 3rd place for example. Paid out 2200. Take out your 370 dollar entry fee (allocating the 80 dollar membership per team over 4 tournaments assuming you are fishing a full division.) That leaves you at 1830. Let's go light on expenses and just say 500 dollars for expenses leaves you with 1330. Divide that in half that leaves you at 665. Not to mention the 1099 associated with the winning. So each team member put up 435 dollars (expenses plus entry fee are now a sunk cost and incurred wether you get a check or not.) to win 665 a piece. You received 3rd place out of 166 teams and had an unbelievable day on the water and beat the entire field besides two teams. Doesn't make a lot of sense does it? Better off putting it on the cowboys The earnings are reminding me of the early 90's. Y'all remember those all or nothing days..

Just think if you traveled let’s say north Texas and came in 5th against the competition down there on Rayburn and only walked away with $1200 that’s a joke . I’m sure someone will be along shortly to justify it though

Don't get me wrong I love to fish the bigger events. The inflation spike that has happened has everyone paying attention to the check book. . Wonder if they take eggs as payment for entry? LOL

If you own a newer truck and boat and decent amount of tackle, you are losing money if you do not win most bass tourneys. You are $100K + in the hole before you leave the bank. If you are fishing any amateur events and thinking you can have a "+ ROI" and you're financing your own endeavor, you are probably delusional. Tournament fishing should be fun, put your white shades down and smile.

A lot of people would have boat and truck payments even if they did not fish tournaments. Same with tackle. I'm going fishing regardless of tournaments. There are trails out there where less than 75-100 boats are fishing for $10,000 guaranteed with a $200 entry fee.

If Rayburn isn’t drawing it’s probably not going to be a good year numbers wise anywhere… having said that I know several people that traditionally fish 2-3 trails in Deep East Texas who have cut it back to only TXTT this year.
I’m with Mr Perry, I’d have that boat/truck payment and be fishing regardless of tournaments. I’m not saying that I enter a tournament expecting an ROI… my goal is always to win, but ultimately if at the end of the year I’ve won enough money to say I paid for all my tournament entries and expenses I’m calling it a decent year. Tournament fishing is fun, but it’s way more fun when you win a chunk of $$$!

Yes, people will have the payments and tackle expenses but as those get more expensive the first thing to get cut is the tournaments. Yes, people will still go fish but its getting to expensive for a lot of people

Most of the fault lies with the government making our money basically worthless with out of control spending and printing money. And the blame lies with both parties.
