From what you describe you are getting buffalo bites...if you set your rod down parallel to the water surface and aim your rod to where you casted and reel in the line till it has just has a bow in it you will detect the bite by watch the line tighten and slacking , on about the 3 pick up or line tightening go ahead and set the hook . I used to fish this way when i first started before i knew about hair rigs and had alarms ... good luck , cant wait to see some pictures !
