This song was maybe one if not the 1st record, I ever bought. I could not have been over 12 years old. It was a 45 rpm vinyl record. I believe I gave less the 2 bucks for it. I have no idea how I had 2 bucks when I was 12 either. We would go thru trash at the local carwash that was a block away and get coke bottles and return them for a Nickle at Piggly Wiggly. College kids would vacuum out their cars and throw them away.

I liked Simon & Garfunkel. I did not like Paul Simon's solo stuff. Slip Sliding Away is on my top ten most hated songs list, along with Le Freak, It's Raining Men, Love Is Thicker Than Water, and anything by the Pointer Sisters.

Origins and history of The Sound of Silence is pretty interesting. Wiki - The Sound of SilenceThe duo's studio audition of the song led to a record deal with Columbia Records, and the original acoustic version was recorded in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City for their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. Released on October 19, 1964,[2] the album was a commercial failure and led to the duo disbanding; Simon returned to England, and Art Garfunkel to his studies at Columbia University. In 1965, the song began to attract airplay at radio stations in Boston and throughout Florida. The growing airplay led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. This remixed version was released as a single in September 1965. Simon & Garfunkel were not informed of the song's remix until after its release. The remix hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending January 1, 1966, leading the duo to reunite and hastily record their second album, which Columbia titled Sounds of Silence in an attempt to capitalize on the song's success.

Disturbed’s version is pretty good Agreed! I think it’s better than the original.

Rarely is a remake superior but when I first heard a snippet of the Disturbed remake in a video game commercial (Call of Duty maybe?), it was eerily familiar and just as the song builds, the commercial was over. After hearing it a few more times I realized it was that old Simon and Garfunkel song and did some investigating. Definitely an interesting story behind the lyrics and to hear Disturbed show their softer side in the remake, was impressive. Quite a departure from some of their other work but very well done, IMO.
