My son is starting his high school tournament career and Im one of the boat captains for the tram. Be a new experience for both of us as Ive never tournament fished though Ive always wanted to.....
Think all Im lacking at this point is a good cull tag system. Can anyone recommend something that isnt out there in price range but will allow me to tag and maybe label/write down weights and has its own storage rack? There are a lot out there but I know some are better than others....
Thanks

Wei use the TH Marine non piercing clips, comes with the balance beam also. Weve been using it for over a year and a half and like it. Theres another brand, Cal Coast, thats suppose to be really good also.

Enjoy the high school fishing. This will be my third year doing it with my son, I oversee the Magnolia High School club also. Its our last year, sons a senior.

I have a set of cheap piercing clips that I've had for probably 15 years. Nothing fancy but have served well.
Last year I picked a set of the cal coast non-piercing and they have performed well. I've had 2 fish come off in the well and they were small unders @Fork.
I rarely take time to weigh and then put a ring on them. If there is a question, they go on a beam and that is that.

So a beam sounds like a definite quicker way to do it for sure. Looking at the reviews of the TH Marine one and it doesnt look too promising. The Cal Coast seems like they are better. Reviews on both talk about having fish die from the clips? Anything to this or maybe some pointers on how NOT to kill fish with them?
And are th a Cal Coast ones able to be used with a beam while tags are still attached?

I rarely have fish die with either clip system. If they do, I've never thought to blame it on the cull ring, I blame myself.
Yes, the cal coast can be used with a beam while attached to the fish.

Btw, the quickest way to do it is to continue to catch fish that you can tell with the naked eye are upgrades!
If your using the beam on any fish less than 4lbs, you're probably not winning anyway. (Exception being fork or a couple of the other slot lakes)

a beam is quicker. But, a beam isn't as accurate as weighing fish on a digital scale. A fish can be within a 1/2 ounce and the beam will still balance due to static drag in the links and beam handle.

Weigh em quick, store them on a scale with memory and use the corresponding cull tag. When the time comes to cull....weigh the new fish and place it on the tag with the lowest weight fish and store the new fish weight on the scale.
Simple when you get the system down, and very accurate when it counts.

We havent had a fish die and never had one come off using the TH Marine clips. They are strong but seem harder to clip than the Cal Coast clips just from looking at them. We use the G-Juice in the livewells, especially when its hot out. Theres other additives also, weve just had great results using G-Juice so we stick with it.

If you have high schoolers catching 5 fish in the west you will be top 5 every tournament except PK in March. Not a whole lot of culling going on but if you are going to fish the captains pot its important to have a way to keep fish separate

Hey better to be prepared right?
I think Im going to get the Cali Coast ones, they look easier to put on than the TH Marine.

I use the ardent non piercing clips and they work great. They attach to piercing clips as well

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip!

Fish dying on clips have nothing to do with the clips. I suggest watching some detailed fish care videos on YouTube. Sure life labs has products like "catch and release" that are very beneficial. Also fizzing videos are helpful.
