Hey everyone! I was directed to this site from a kind Sir that just finished a weekly Friday tournament (working mans?) on Lake Lewisville. I got to see a 10.5lb bass for the first time... that was a monster. Anyhow, I recently moved out this way and got a boat to fish/cruise the lake. I take my young kids out, hang out at Little Elm Beach, feed the fish, etc.. It's plenty of lake to keep me entertained, but I'm not having much success catching fish. I know they're out there, but I must not be doing something right, or it's just a bad luck streak. I'll either fish early mornings (6am-9am) with the kids or evenings (7pm-1am) with my dad/brothers. I've fished from land, raised areas on boat, used worms, shrimp, minnows, stink bait, blue gill, buzz baits, crank baits, ... the list goes on and on. My son and brother caught some smaller 2-3lb cats, but I've only been 1st hand witness to 3 fish caught on this lake.
I just purchased an elite 5 ti to help with finding some underwater structures, topography for raised areas, marking those trees spearing out of the water, and hopefully finding fish. I'm not really frustrated, because we still have a great time going out and relaxing, but it would be nice to catch a fish or a few when we go out, even if they aren't shattering lake records.
Maybe it's the time of the year, maybe it's the rigging, maybe it's not locating them before we anchor down, idk. Hopefully some of you can share some tips, tricks, locations, baits, etc to make these memories that much better. Hopefully, I'd like to think I'm fishing in some of these weekly tournaments in the near future and bringing in some respectable fish.
I typically drop in at Pilot Point and fish that leg of the lake. Thanks in advance for anything you throw my way

Right now the sand bass are surfacing late afternoon at the dam. That's the best fun for the kids.Slabs and top water prop baits.
Good luck getting advice! Most guys protect their spots. Summer is tough because of heat and boat traffic. Look deep!
Marinas are a good place to start. Wind and weather are the key.
PM me and I will try to help. I have a few spots I can give up on the North end.
Tight lines!

Thanks Diesel! I'll give the dam a shot. It's funny you say look deep, when online vids say to look at the raised spots. I get people not wanting to give up spots. I'm catch and release if that helps. I may take you up on the north end spots, but hoping there's some areas near the pilot point leg (closer). Can't wait for the elite 5 to come in, I'll start trolling around some areas looking instead of waiting. I might even build a thumper... seems like those attract the fish. Also, I'm interested in technique for finding some spots, baits to use, etc. Part of the fun is hunting for them!

I recommend, hiring Phills Guide service for a day trip. Phill is an awesome guide that will teach you what to look for and how to get on them.
If it's legal ain't no way in hell it's catch and release, it's CATCH & GREASE, except ROUGH (TRASH) Fish

Hire a guide to take you and the kids out to learn the "lay of the land". I went out with Jackie Wiggins and not only did he put my kids on a whole mess of fish, but taught me a lot about some of the Summer, winter anf fall patterns for cats and white bass.

Hiring a guide is good advice, but in the meantime, fish the bridge pilings on I-35. Use minnows or crappie jigs and you will catch fish. You can expect black bass, crappie, catfish and sand bass. Drop your bait within a foot or so of each piling and vary the depth about a foot at a time, starting at the bottom. If you don't catch a fish in 5 or 10 minutes, move to another piling. The Elite 5 will help you on the bridge for sure, but it's not necessary.

Thanks for the information! Going to hit up the poles today/tonight and see how it goes. The Elite 5 has some great notes/spots in it as well. Very excited to put in some way points on fish!

So, we caught a catfish (2lb) near the poles, but just one in 3 hours of fishing on trolling with minnows. I recently tried some led (yes the lights) weights to bring the fish in at night, but honestly it didn't seem to make a difference. Shrimp doesn't seem to attract anything around here; chicken liver, worms, and power bait balls work fairly well, and minnows work ok. Fishing the rocks near the 35 bridge doesn't seem to attract any bass (I feel like I've thrown every lure out there). I'm going to hit a couple of the Lowrance's suggested hot spots next weekend and throw everything at these fish. I've got a led light to bring in bait fish, led weight 1ft from the bait; it's going to be an underwater disco! Anyone know where to buy live crawfish? Someone had some along the bank, but I didn't think to ask where he got them.

The fishing will get a lot better here in a month or so. The hottest part of summer is my least favorite time of the year to fish. Good luck
It's only a good cast if you catch a fish... Personal Best: 11.62 lbs

I sure hope so, I was starting to think my local pond had all the fish in it.

Pick one species of fish you want to catch, and read about their habits for the given season. Next important thing is location, location, location. Armed with the species specific details you have looked up go to the lake and idle around staring at that sonar and leave the poles alone. Find you some structure(bottom contours such as points, creek channels, drop offs, and cover(boat houses, brush piles, bridge pilings). Mark anything like creek channels, timbered points etc for you to come back too. Now that you have some stuff to throw at, and a species in mind go out with just the stuff for that species and target the stuff you have found. If its catfish you need to get a cast net and learn to catch shad. If its white bass you'll be looking at points and humps near river channel and such. Black bass...well I'm a fan of leaving those for later if you just want to have some fun learning to fish.

IMO, Lewisville is one of the toughest summertime lakes in the area. Wait a couple of months for the fall/winter weather and the fish will start biting again. Target points and marinas.

So we threw the disco party all over lake lewisville; we even invited goldfish to make it more lively. We didn't catch squat. We hit up the deepest parts, the poles, the rocks, random spots that had fish... holy moly. The beer was good and cold though.

You mite consider a guide for a half day learning trip. Usually runs 275-375 and they will show you what to do this time of year. Experience costs time or money
