If I asked in Produce for unripe plantains would they point to green bananas?

Just ask for plantains, but be prepared to show your receipt.

Try tossing them in Buffalo wing sauce. Had Buffalo tostones at a brewery in Portland, OR. They are delicious.

Eat them all the time. Wife is from Panama. It's a staple to them. Let some get overripe and turn black. Sautee them in butter, brown sugar and cinnomin, and they make a tasty desert.

No. They're closely related but they don't have as much sugar as a banana and are more starchy. The green ones have a texture and taste closer to a potato than a banana. So when you're looking at what they're cooking, in your mind you could substitute those new red potatoes. It isn't exact, but it's closer.

I've tried plantains prepared a few different ways. Just never developed a taste for them, but if someone cooks them up, I'll eat them.
