Kids found a crab under a rock at Hubbard Creek lake in Breckenridge the other day. I had never seen or heard of a freshwater crab before so I emailed a picture to TPWD. Received a prompt reply stating that their Abilene Fisheries department identified it as a Harris crab and they have been introduced into several lakes in my area including possum kingdom. I thought it was pretty interesting.

I've found the in a bunch of lakes out here. Hubbard Creek, PK, Ivie, Texoma.
Interesting find, but not that uncommon.

Granbury too. Look like the crabs you see at night on the beach.

Hubbard Creek is full of them. With the lake low just turn over any large recently submerged tree limb or rock. Some get a little bigger than a silver dollar

I'm wondering 2 things...
First, would they make good catfish bait? Crawfish and shrimp are great bait so I don't see why not.
Second, is it legal to use them for bait?

Holy moly - Wiki says there's about 1,300 species of them!
Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

A game warden told me they are impacting the crawdad populations, haven't seen any data to support that. I actually throw a DOA crab with good success.

I know for saltwater crabs are an impressive bait for both reds and specks so seems like Bass would be all over it!

Back when I used to bass fish someone was making a soft plastic crab bait. The bride bought me some and the bass in Conroe loved 'em.
