Is it legal for a Wal-Mart door greeter to detain me and check my purchases as I am leaving the store? If I refuse what can Wal-Mart legally do?
I get a little bit PO'd when I'm in the handicap scooter headed got for my car.
Unless they are suspecting me of being a thief I don't think they can check me out like I stole something.

Best Buy and Fry's do the same thing. It is legal and more a check on their workers than you.

It's their store, their property and their business. They have a right to refuse your business if they wanted too.

I beg to differ. After I pay for the merchandise and it is sacked up and I have my receipt in hand it is my merchandise not theirs. A cop cannot search my vehicle unless I give him permission or he suspects me of a crime.
Wal-Mart is either searching my property without my permission or they are accusing me of a crime.
Does a door greeter have more rights to search than a duly sworn officer of the law?

i don't comply to that stuff, not even at fry's. urb, the way i see it is he has already paid for his stuff, it doesn't belong to walmart anymore. if they wanted to refuse his business, they should have done it before he paid

It's their store, their property and their business. They have a right to refuse your business if they wanted too. No, that's not how it works. They can ASK to check your receipt. They can not detain you if you refuse. You can say no and keep walking and there's not a thing they can do about it. There are specific laws relating to detaining a person for suspicion of theft, and not showing a receipt is NOT one of them. Once you purchase an item, it's yours. They no longer have any interest in the item. For them to detain you, they have to have seen you hide the item or bypass the registers, and they have to have kept eyes on you the entire time. There are plenty of websites that detail how this law works and what your rights are. This notion that somehow a store employee has the right to physically detain you at will because your on their property, etc. is ridiculous.

Next time get up from their scooter and make a huge fuss. Scream at them how it's not only illegal, but insulting and harassment. Just remember in your heart, you will be a hero/a champion for our rights, not the fool everyone is pointing and laughing at.
