I’m looking to get a new 5wt and would appreciate opinions on either 8’6” or 9’. I started with a 8’6” back in the day and moved to a 9’. I used both for trout in Colorado, the San Juan along with bass here in Texas and use it out of a kayak. My other rods are 3wt 7’6” small trout/panfish and 7wt 9’ for saltwater. I’m leaning toward going back to 8’6” not sure why so looking for other opinions, thanks for the input.

I love my 7'9" 5 weight for Colorado creek and small river fishing but I would want a 7 weight for bass. I have an 8 but it always feels like I am using too much club...
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

For bass and most western rivers I would go a minimum 9'0. I have a 9.6' Sage One that is now my go to rod. I love it for poppers for bass to nymphing and streamers for trout. When trout fishing on bigger rivers, the extra 6" really helps with mending especially in windy conditions.
Good luck !
