me and a buddy went to welch yesterday from about 7 till 8:30 and we didn't catch anything. we both got a bite here and there just didn't hook anything. Plus the wind was crazy literally couldn't cast into the wind.

If you think it's tough throwing conventional gear into that wind you ought to try throwing a fly IMPOSSIBLE One of the things I had read on the internet was to fish shallow coves. The white bass will often herd the shad into these shallow coves even on the upwind side of the lake. I tried this in the evening 3 times this year without luck. But I did find them in a shallow cove on the upwind side of the lake the last 2 mornings. This morning was probably one of the best days of fishing we will have this year. It was ridiculous. I started fishing around 6:15 AM. I fished in a cove then moved out to a point. By 8:45 I was sick of catching white bass, LOL. I didn't keep count but I easily caught over 60 white bass this morning. Light winds and pre-front conditions made for some incredibly fun fishing. There are large numbers of smallmouth buffalo and channel catfish in the shallows as well. I talked to a guy who had 8 catfish yesterday. I caught a 3.2 lb. channel cat yesterday and a 3.9 lber today. I've been catching buffalo every day as well.

Went back out to welch this morning. They weren't on the bank for very long at all. I had my kayak so I just followed them out to deeper water and just slayed them. It sure is exciting when they start hitting the surface all around you. There were more hybrids in the mix as well. It won't be too long before they are legal.

I know that catfish looks mighty tasty and all J-Moe, but at least clean it, roll it in some corn meal, drop it in hot grease before you take a bite out of it next time. But I got a ask, how does that raw tail taste?

There are more write ups on bank fishing to read than anything else. I need to get my boat over there on Somerville.

But I got a ask, how does that raw tail taste? Ha, that's funny. Just an illusion as the tail fell into the crack of the tail gate. He was released to be caught again. Plenty of boats out there chasing those white bass too. Just no reports.

Joined this forum yesterday and this is my first post. My new bride and I went RVing for our honeymoon at Rocky Creek Park. We outran the storms hitting Austin area last Friday and luckily set camp up just in time before the rain hit Lake Somerville. After the rain passed, I grabbed some plastic worms and hit the banks to wet a hook. Lucky for me, I ran into a couple of local gents who informed me that if I wanted to have some quick fun, to come back to the boat ramp before sun-up, catch some live shad, and enjoy the action. It was a wild morning just as they stated up till about 8:00am and just like a light switch turned off, they stop hitting the top of the water and they moved. Did the same on Sunday morning, but didn't catch but a couple on Monday morning before we cleaned up our RV campsite and left for home. A couple of older gents informed me they were headed to the other side of the lake as that is where they have moved most likely. I appreciate everyone's input on this, new to me, fishing frenzy of white bassing! I will definitely be back soon and maybe try out Birch Creek State Park next.

If you think that was fun then you should join everyone in the spawn fishing from the bank. It occurs in Feb and March. It's all fun though.

I saw fish working around the point and moved over there and caught a ton of whites and hybrids. Some of the hybrids were 16" long and fought like heck. Kept 12 big whites from that area. Then on the way to the ramp I saw some schooling action in a cove close to Yegua Park and caught 6 more big whites. The dog and I had a fun and relaxing morning!

I like to use a bait called rattling chug bug for schooling whites, silver with blue on top. Walk the dog with this thing and hold on, they really blow up on this bait. It's about three or four inches long, I think it's a half ounce bait. They make two sizes and I use the longer one. When they go down then I throw a rooster tail. White with black spots, the bigger one as well. I haven't done this in probably fifteen years and I need to get out there for some of this action.

I believe a talked to you at the boat ramp. I was the one with the fly vest and fly rod. Welcome to the forum. Hope to hear some more good reports from you in the future.
