Did I see where someone inadvertently mentioned the Thermocline? Regardless of depth?
Ran across a guy that brushed out his boat dock...at around 5 feet, then pot out BPs all the way to the main river channel in 3-5 ft depth intervals (straight from his dock)...if you happened to be fishing those piles, he would come out and ask where the crappie were bunched up...he never really cared where they were, he just wanted to know how far out to go when he started fishing...as he had attractors at every depth!...the lesson here...cover all your bases, and it doesnt much matter... Smart guy built himself a crappie sidewalk.
“Livescope: (noun.) 1. A tool used by fish to frustrate the ever livin’ daylights out of fishermen.”

BPs at 8-12 feet are productive on most lakes except where there is really clear water. If it's super clear, 15-22 ft. As mentioned above, thermocline is a deciding factor for summertime. And the thermocline is different on most lakes but is usually no deeper than 18 ft. on 90% of them. BPs in 8-12 ft make good staging areas for pre-spawn and good holding areas for post spawn. The shad spawn usually starts about 30-45 days after the first wave of crappie spawn. Crappie will be hanging close to shad spawn areas thru May. By mid to late June the thermocline will begin to set in. Big wide open lakes like Cedar Creek catch more wind/wave action and will have a deeper thermocline. I'd try a couple BPs a little shallower and see what happens.

For me it can be anywhere from 10-22 just depends on the day, but 10-14 is usually the money zone

You mentioned summertime, when the surface temperature hits 80 degrees and above on Toledo Bend I build them in 26' to 32'.

No expert here but it does depend greatly on the individual lake as each lake fishes differently. On some lakes, 10-20ft will produce all summer long and on other lakes 20-30ft will produce and anything less than 20ft wont. IMO, if you are only fishing brushpiles for crappie year round, then you are missing the best fishing at certain times of the year. Brush piles tend to hold good numbers of good fish from roughly May-November. From December-April, while brush may still hold a few, it is not the best locations as this is when the creeks and deep open water get good (Winter) and shallow timber, stumps and rocks are good (spring). Hooray...now that is an excellent answer! And it is spot on, as well!
