Say you have a 96 year old relative that's been scheduled for yet another hip replacement, very good health other than being an old, there have been some concerns about going under for this procedure, what gives?

I would be hard pressed to believe the benefits of a new hip would outweigh the possible complications of surgery on a 96 year old.

Id trust the Dr over anything youll read here.

With that said, Ive often heard the elderly have a greater problem recovering from anesthesia than the procedure. Its a pretty invasive procedure and your Dr has to weigh quality of life afterwards, survivabilty and who knows what other factors.

She had her other replaced about 4 years ago, she's already made her decision which I have to respect, just trying to figure out the stats on olds under anesthesia

I have read that is one of the most dangerous part of a lot of surgeries, especially if you have been under several times.

anesthesia is hard on the heart and lungs, thus anyone who is at a higher risk they want to make sure they are able to handle it.

I had a severe back injury in an auto accident over 40 years ago and was in constant pain. At that time they did not have all of the modern tests and procedures we have today. After over 5 years of pain it gradually got better and it has now been years since I have had any problem. If I make it to 96 and was living constant severe pain I would probably say what the hell go for it what have I got to lose. If it was just minor inconvenience I would probably just live with it.

This would be my concern. I'm not an anesthesiologist but deal with this on a day to day bases. Just make sure the heart can handle it. Ask about the injection factor. That will tell how well (strong) the heart is. Also has she had previous heart attacks or stents placed in the coronary arteries. Does she have any lung issues such as COPD. If the lungs are weak it will be harder to come of the ventilator. Just thinks to think about.

No previous heart attacks, a few mild strokes, no lung/copd issues, overall good health, been in constant miserable pain for about a month

Surgeon should run some tests to see if patient is able to handle the surgery. My father in-law had a knee replacement done last year at 93yoa and came thru just fine.
