I knew exactly what the article was about before I even read it.
Way back when the St. Louis baseball Cardinals still played in Busch Stadium, my brother was part of the decision group that had them actually switch from turf to natural grass. And money was a big part of the decision. He flew to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Wrigley and a few others to meet with their personnel and view their facilities as part of their decision making process. However, unlike whats described in the article, St. Louis actually was trying for more of the baseball experience vs worrying so much about the bottom line.
Isnt the new facility supposed to be covered as well? Would make it hard to grow turf with no Sol.

Who cares? They already are putting a roof on it because some pansies cant deal with the sun in summer.
They require AC.
That is not baseball. The whole thing is kind of a joke. Its baseball, its summer, yeah its hot... Get over it.

Turf needs no sol or water. Grass or pot can be grown inside or with a retractable roof or, like they do for the Arz Cardinals the entire field rolls out of Univ of Phoenix Stadium into the AZ sun. Harder to roll out a odd shaped baseball field as opposed to a rectangle. But like many other retractable roof stadiums they can gross grass.

I agree. I've been to Minute Made and Miller Park and they feel so small especially for baseball. Baseball should be played outside.

This yep, inside on artificial turf isn't real baseball.

Five of the six MLB parks that feature retractable roofs use real grass. This list includes Houston, Arizona and Miami.
I stole that from a star telegram article. I think Toronto is the only one on turff

Yes on the roof, no on the fake grass NO ROOF! The ball goes farther the hotter it is! 76 degrees in an AC cooled stadium in July in Texas is NOT how god meant baseball to be played!

Minute Maid park in July, 78degrees is nice. Agreed. Especially since the Astros already had 69 wins before the end of July.

Terrible. Agree with Butch
I thought their argument for a new stadium was to improve chances of signing free agent pitchers.
Pitchers do not want a screaming low bounding hit off of artificial turf heading straight towards them.

first off it is really bad in the current stadium in the shade and just unbearable in the sun so I understand wanting a cover. but how is turf going to bring in free agents? no one likes to play on it.

The Astrodome was originally grass until it died off from being enclosed. It doesnt work so AstroTurf was born. You could see a green film at the top of the dome from the grass experiment. Retractable and grass will grow, not enclosed.

Is it too late to just put a retractable on their beautiful existing stadium? I know they said that option was cost prohibitive, but I don't believe a word they say Atlanta successfully completed this option in under six months or so. If Atlanta can do it, I know we can; and do it better.

Im all for the roof and turf. I love me some AC, cold beers and not having to sweat my nuts off next to some 350lb lardo choking down lemon freezes, chili cheese fries, and no bite hot dogs.

Retractable and grass will grow, not enclosed. Grass do grow until they painted the glass roof because the players complained about the sun in their eyes. Go figure!

How many games per year do you attend in 100 plus degree heat indexes? I hit probably 5-6 a year during the hottest of the hot months and I personally can't wait for a roof and AC.

I was wrong about the Atlanta stadium. What I was remembering The Atlanta Braves opened SunTrust Park last year and basically had the same decision tree as the Rangers 1--put retractable roof on existing stadium (the "old" Turner Field) 2--new stadium with retractable roof 3--new stadium with a sun canopy
They chose option 3 sun canopy

Quit going to games with 1shot. Problem solved, and the taxpayers of dfw dont have to shell out millions for a new stadium. Also, I dont think raners fans would want an indoor venue. The acoustics are much better than in an open air stadium, so you would just be able to hear the raners suck out loud.

It will be fantastic to go to a day game in July/August without the sweltering heat & sun. I'm not crazy about having turf instead of grass but I'll live with it to have the roof & AC.

The heat is part of the experience! For players, for fans, for the way the game is played by all those who love it and never make the big show. Get your sunscreen, cold drinks and maybe little fan mister water bottle and take in the summer! If you require AC watch on TV. Thats just me. I could agree with more shade being added but a roof and turf? Well I never!

Zzzzzz Rangers will suck for a while. They know it, dont care and want to generate other revenue with THEIR stadium. It will be fine. Boredom ball will continue in Arlinden as it always has. Until JD is gone nothing will change. Hes living on history.
