Took last Friday off and spent a long weekend camped out at the Blue with a buddy of mine. The object was to celebrate my birthday and to shoot a video. Both were successful. Campfires were poked, whiskey was drank, cigars were smoked, stories were told and trout were caught. Spent Friday setting up camp, shooting video and cooking dinner. Pan fried pork chops, mashed potatoes, corn and ceaser salad. Got pretty chilly Friday night so we slept in a little Saturday morning. Cooked some breakfast and ate huddled next to the fire until it warmed up a little, then we hit the river. Fished mostly with olive wooly boogers. Lots of midges in the air and on the water but I didn't want to get to technical with it while trying to shoot. Besides, my fingers were too cold to tie many knots. Saturday night we sat around camp listening to rain, eating and sipping whiskey. My buddy have to leave Sunday at lunch so we ate a big breakfast and sat by the fire until it was time for him to leave. Sunday was my actual birthday so I decided I would hit the river for a short time before I left. I had all the video I wanted but I wanted to catch a trout or two before i left just because a guy SHOULD do that on his birthday. I new of a spot were I thought I could catch one fairly quickly. As it turned out, the spot was loaded. I lost count at tweleve or so, figure I probably got about twenty in two hours. I was trying to decide when I should call it quits, head back, fold up camp and call it a trip when I caught this trout I measured at fourteen and a half inches. decided that was a good one to call the trip on. Yes sir, a good trip...

Beautiful split cane rod! I have cast grass at the Blue River many times. Your post brings back many memories for me... Burgers at Scotties, testing out my split cane rods, camping and hearing the coyotes at night, water moccasins, turkeys..... The list goes on.
I've caught more fish there on teeny tiny flies than just about anywhere else I've fished.
Does Barry Schrader still hang out at the Blue?

Happy birthday bud how did it feel getting out with the tent again! Not quite as many amenities as your other camping device .was also probably nice getting to buy the whisky without a fake id:). Really some great shots looks like a good time was had. I will have to let you know when but looking at making a run up there soon myself.

Thank you Split cane! It was a birthday gift from my wife eleven years ago. I think everything was hybernating from the cold last weekend. I heard one owl for a couple of minutes one night and that was it - besides the rsin. Nothing much beats a hot Scottie burger on a chilli afternoon.

Thank you Robert! It felt great to get out in the elements again. My other "device" is really nice but its also quite sterel. You loose some of the romance of camping in that thing. Hit me up when your ready. I'd love to make a,trip up there with you.

Last time I was there camping . . . 30 mph winds brought in 19 degree temperatures the day arrived. It did not get above freezing until day 3. A sheet of ice formed on the inside of the top of my tent from my breath freezing when it hit it. I also slipped on a rock and fell in the falls above 7 (hitting some rocks on my fall helped me from soaking more than one side). Still, we braved it. Caught a slew of trout and cooked some of them at camp.

Well happy birthday, Capt. Mac! Glad you had a great trip. Those olive wooly buggers will catch just about anything, won't they?

I'm my own worst critic when it comes to creative endeavors...I usually have to remind myself that "perfect is the enemy of good." You'll know when they are ready, and then the rest of us will be able to vicariously fish with you on your birthday!
