Went on scouting trip from 8:45AM to 12:45PM. I caught 52 in 5 different spots catching 10 then moving on: Key Ranch Drop-off in 13 to 16 fow, SE corner of Spillway Hump in 16 to 18 fow, middle of south edge of Spillway Hump in 16 to 18 fow, NE tip of Spillway Hump in 12 to 16 fow, and south drop-off of Enchanted Isle Ridge in 18 to 20 fow. Caught most on #4 Mepps Aglia and a few on #2 Mepps Aglia. All fish were within a foot of the bottom. The best spot was Enchanted Isle Ridge, where I caught a fish on every cast and left catching then that way. The 52 were mostly white bass in 13 to 15 inch range, but also caught 3 legal hybrids, a few good sized yellow bass and a couple of cats. Water temp is down to 60 degrees F.

Nice and helpful report, DC. Thanks. Since the temp is lower and fish are hugging the bottom more now, do you slow retrieve and do fewer cranks like 2 to 3 cranks then repeat? I marked good fish not stacked up but more at the bottom like you said and not having good results with #4 mepps this time of the year compares to warmer temp days. Are the hits at first or second crank?

Thanks for the report. Was good seeing you on Saturday. Thanks for the pointers at enchanted isle. We caught a few there drifting since my trolling motor battery died.

Todd, yes, fewer turns and slower. Also, a jerk start with slow retrieve is working best. Also throwing in some erratic jerks to tease the fish. I am still finding schools here where I do better with #2's. Pretty sure I'm on smaller shad.

Dec 6: Went out to do some cold weather white bass structure fishing. All four spots I checked had fish hugging the bottom. I caught 10 white bass at each spot then moved on to check the other spots. All spots had the same sonar pattern - 2 pics below. Sidescan does not do a good job of picking up fish hugging the bottom, so I didn't take a pic of it. The pics are of the same spot and the left side of the screen is zoomed in X2. When the fish are hugging the bottom this screen works best to see the fish. I caught a total of 52 fish using a #4 Mepps. The other 12 were: 4 short hybrids, 5 good size yellow bass, 2 crappie and one cat. At each spot I would cast to the fish, let Mepps fall to bottom, start the retrieve suddenly horizontally along the bottom but reel slowly 2 to 4 cranks of my 7.5 ratio reel. After catching a few this way, I would start stomping the boat deck with my #13 foot, and within seconds I could see fish congregating under the boat. Then I worked Mepps around the boat, and they bit it as I slowly reeled it up. Only caught one on the fall. Water temp is now 59.5 degrees F. The spots were east end of Long Ridge in 25 fow, far west part of Long Ridge in 20 fow, Mid-lake Hump in 22 fow and 3-Jug Hump in 18 fow. This is how I winter fish here at CC. I haven't had to dead-stick to catch fish. Dec 11: Saw water temps ranging from 56.1 to 57.4 degrees today. Fish are a little more sluggish. Found that a white bladed Mepps #4 works best now. In fact I could hardly get a bite with silver, but they took white readily. Caught 30 with some at Mid-lake Hump in 23 fow, 3-Jug Hump in 21 fow and Merimac Point in 16 to 23 fow. White Mepps better than silver today:

Today there were good concentrations of white bass at Merimac Point in 16 to 18 fow and at Enchanted Isle Ridge in 18 to 20 fow. Still catching them on white #4 Mepps. Sonar pic of Enchanted Isle whites (the pic was distorted by the 2 ft waves I was in):

Friday 12/15 afternoon: Found fish on Dam Ridge in 19 fow and at Campbell's Hump in 15 to 20 fow. Same bottom pattern as above. They took white #4 Mepps working slowly along bottom.

FYI: I have now joined those who are lure makers. But I use parts from old one and two hook Mepps or have the paint worn off. I throw the old wire and hook away and save all the other parts, adding new wire, new treble hook and new plastic on hook shank. Also spray old blades with white or silver paint before putting back together. The refurbished Mepps work as good as the originals. Still looking for someone who can make a knock-off as good as the original. I've tried Randall's, Leroy's, Todd's and, the latest, Charlie's. The main problem is they don't spin as readily as the Mepps.

Dennis, Would it be correct to assume there are lots of bait fish on your screens but you have it dialed down so much that you only see the fish? I think this may have been a fatal flaw to my fish finding. I can find big schools of bait but there is so much on the screen I may be missing all the game fish and just constantly driving over them looking for something incredible.
Whats you thoughts?
Thank you OP Aggie

Actually, that is not true. Look at the right side of my screens. It shows bottom to top and there are no balls of bait fish above the whites hunkered down on bottom. I prefer it that way. Less competition for my Mepps.

Thanks for the feedback, DC. I've fished you a few times and you tell it like it is and I love that. It's fun tweaking the mepps too FYI: I have now joined those who are lure makers. But I use parts from old one and two hook Mepps or have the paint worn off. I throw the old wire and hook away and save all the other parts, adding new wire, new treble hook and new plastic on hook shank.
