On a recent episode of major league fishing, they talked about how northern smallmouth do not react well to clouds, that they prefer sunlight.
Is this also the case down here in TX? Is a cloudy day good or bad news for TX smallmouth?

My best smallmouth days here have always been cloudy, the darker the clouds the better... and if its sleeting a little or light rain its double on. Having said that I usually only target the smallies in November and December when the water temps are in the mid 50's. Don't know if that makes a difference or not, but usually when the sun gets up high in the sky the smallie bite for me becomes super tough.

Nasty weather is usually better for me here on smallmouth, caught them pretty good Friday morning in a heavy fog. As far as numbers go, they usually group up better on sunny days imo.

Northern smallmouth and southern smallmouth are total opposites. Trust me I learned this the hard way my first few tournaments up north. When it's cloudy up north you catch them on the bottom and when its sunny is when you catch them on topwaters, jerkbaits and spinnerbaits. They are much more sight feeders in the clearer northern waters and the southern smallmouth seem to feed more like the largemouth and spots in the south just usually in different areas.

When we were on St Clair the fishing was much better on the bluebird calm day than the others.

I'd agree with blue skies, but I found some wind to get them to be aggressive. Especially to get the spinnerbait bite going. I miss fishing LSC so much!!!! Sold - gave away 50 lbs of tubes and jig heads when I moved down here. Of course my friends always send me pix of their catches.

All 4 of my Smallmouth over 5 pounds were caught at night on black single-spins after cloudless days.

I don't know much about smallmouth in general and sure don't know about Texoma smallmouth but my experience has been that I caught the biggest and most on sunny days. During the Costa this year one of my buddies that was sharing a cabin with caught a ton on spooks in the sun on Day 1 and couldn't buy a topwaters bite on day 2 which was overcast most of the day. When the sun broke out for a few minutes I caught my only smallie of the tourney for me. 2 weeks before the tourney I had been smashing 3-4lb smallies by burning a spinnerbait off main lake points and around boulders. This was on sunny days as well. This bite was gone by the time the tourney got here.
