I was on Pool night fishing Fri and Sat starting around 10 PM. It was amazing how many crappie fishermen were out anchored with no lights on. If you headed their way, they wouldn't even flip them on then to let you know that they were out there, they'd just try using a flashlight to get your attention. Around 3AM, I was coming out of the marina and saw a really tall tree. Knowing that there was no timber in the area I was curious and headed over to investigate. It was a stupid sailboat driving in the dark with no lights. They didn't even try to signal me off. I didn't get over 5 MPH because you couldn't see them until you were right on them.
I fish it pretty often at night and you might find a boat back up in a cove or creek with no lights but they'll turn them on when they hear you. Never saw so may boats in the main lake without them. If you go out be careful.

Probably trying to avoid attracting bugs but that's no excuse.

I scared the [censored] out of a kayaker last night. It was twilight and I was on pad....doing about 60. I was trying to steer clear of hundreds of ducks, and a yaker was trying to paddle into them. Those ducks scattered, and there he was. No lights.....I missed him by maybe 30-40yrds. He was flapping his paddle about as fast the birds were flapping their wings.
Fool.
Gotta watch out. I guess.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

MetroMess!!! Should call GW', ESPECIALLY when you have MULTIPLE occurrences on one lake in one night. Geez.......Sounds to me like there were more boats on the water operating "illegally " than there were legal.

I haven't been out there at night since last summer, but one day I was out there until Dark and there where Kayaks out there with no lights, so unless there is a full moon and I'm on the main lake, I don't feel comfortable running out there after dark. It's crazy how some people are so stupid, and if you take into account that it's in the city, the likelihood of encountering dumb/naive people is double or triple what it would be out in the country somewhere.

Kayaks are hard enough to see during the day, depending on the color of the kayak. Don't know how many close calls I had because of the sun and their low profile. I always thought that they should have some type of flag mounted above them like you used to see on kids bikes and trikes so people would see them.

I have seen a TON of boats recently early in the AM with no lights on. Idiots that cant think past their noses dont realize how dangerous it is, or dont care.

Being an avid Kayaker, I always wear bright colors if I'm out on the lake in hopes that I'm spotted easier. Heck, my life jacket is bright orange and I always wear it. If I'm still not seen, and a boat is coming up on me a little fast and not steering away from me, I hold my paddle up and high as I can and wave it back forth. Only had to do that a few times though. IF I ever go out at night, I always have lights on. LED's are not that expensive now so there's no excuse to not be visible.

I could take a clicker to the amount of boats leaving Diablo East in the morning with no lights on.

You are one of the VERY FEW then. Most Yakkers I've talked to copped an attitude when visibility issue came into the conversation. " We've got just as much right to be there as YOU do!!!" I agree. Totally. But they get quiet when someone says" Yes you do but YOU also have as much RESPONSIBILITY to meet requirements pertaining visibility during low visibility conditions AND nighttime navigation. Sure, you can ride a bike on roadways, but are ya gonna do it on the dark highways. You can if properly lit, but WHY would you want to?? You can ride a motorcycle, but, do you want to on icy hazardous roads? Its more of a common sense situation. Not a "because I CAN" situation. I also don't run my 70mph+ boat at 70 at night.

The OP titled this thread correctly. Most likely he could edit it to night/day. Because IT doesn't start at dark only. LOL
