I purchased a used Native 12 Ultimate this week. I took it out yesterday for the first time. I laid one my fly rods that was broken down into 2 pieces in the back of the yak. It slid under the seat at some point and I broke the tip. Not the first, second or third time I've had to use the TFO warranty. So, in order to try to minimize the chances of breaking another rod I figured I would invest in some fly rod holders. What make and model fly rod holder do you use? How and where do you install them? Any preferences on direction, location, things to consider would be appreciated. Note, I spend a lot of time in heavily tree lined creeks so vertical mounting is out of the question. I also have to be concerned when pushing through tree limbs, etc. so I expect the ability to point them forward or straight out the back of the yak is critical. I'm sure I can learn a lot from your mistakes and maybe limit a few of my own in the future

Yes, I saw them for as low as 19.95. I assumed the Scotty would be most people's first choice.
Since I won't be using the installed rod holders I was thinking that it may be an option to fit them somehow with fly rod holders. Not sure that's even the best option, just thinking out loud.
Thanks Brad

If you like the Scotty fly rod holder, it should attach with a Scotty Gear Head Adapter that will fit into the groove tracks, or in the rod mounts behind the seat.

I have a Commander kayak that has that open, non self-bailing design similar to the Ultimate. I carry 2-3 fly rods strung and ready and just place them inside the hull laying down between my legs. I strip the line for casting right on top of the spare rod or rods without any issues. The spare rods help keep the line from piling into a clump and so mostly avoiding tangled running line. Your deck on the Ulitimate looks similar to the Commander. I don't know if what I described would work for your Ultimate but just wanted to share my experience in case it might be a fit.
I use a 7'6" or 8' foot fly rods most of the time and the tips go to the about the tip of the kayak bow. I have a Scotty fly rod holder and a mount on my port side, but that proved to cause more issues than putting the rods between my feet.

Been happy with the Railblaza Holder II mounted forward and the fly rod facing aft. Video of holder in use with fly rod.I used the star mount but they make they have a mounting system that uses rails as well.

I have the Scotty Powerlock rod holders and they work well for fly and spinning rods. They work okay but not great for baitcasters.

I also just bought a native ultimate 12 last week! The gentleman before me had the Scotty fly rod holders. I don't fly fish and would be more than willing to send you the rod holders if you covered shipping. I'm going to reuse the mounts but I can give you the actual rod holders of you'd like

Thanks for the comments. I like the idea of mounting them on the rails. I could slide the rod forward when paddling through brushy areas and slide it back when casting.
Karstopo, I get your point about laying the rods down between your legs and the possible problems the holder could cause when fly casting. Clumsy as I am it may be risky though.

Railblaza rod holders hold every type of rod but dont limit you to only one type of rod.

Most of my fishing is out of my SoloSkiff, but I still use the Torque and the Trident from time to time. All three are rigged similarly. I run a Scotty fly rod holder forward and a pair of them on extensions aft. They are oriented a bit above horizontal. The front unit faces forward, and the two rear units face aft. The Scotty units will work just fine with levelwinds or spinning reels, for those of you who use the conventional gear also. I throw a rubber landing net over the forward rod holder when casting while seated, to keep the line from fouling on it.
